We are in a pattern that has become increasingly more common in the last decade. When this pattern is mild it produces counterclockwise eddies off the Golden Gate that delight those at some sites while others hate the mere mention of an eddy.
But when this pattern is very strong, like today, an eddy can not for and only a few sites have strong usable wind. Unfortunately, this strong pattern brings very low humidity and very powerful wind in the hills raising the fire danger.
The graphic below shows the wind situation at 7:30 AM. Note the strong NW ocean winds and the much stronger NNE winds aloft hitting the ridges. As htose NNE winds descend closer to the surface this afternoon the battle begins.
Watch for a blog detailing this battle later today.
