Hi Gang,

For many years Ben and I have been looking for a new location for a solar wireless weather station to replace the near-useless 110V/phone line sensor in the middle of the golf facility.

It took a long time to hammer out a deal with the property owners hence the long delay. But with siting help of some dedicated kiting locals, and the amazing weatherflow.com sensor crew the new sensor is now operational. You can see its location below.

In advance, we briefed the local kiting crew on all the micro variables that can impact a sensor reading and all of us are confident that this location will be much better than the old sensor. And it is the best location we could obtain.

This sensor should NOT be used to estimate the winds out towards the channel marker. Instead, use this sensor to get a good reading of the wind strength and direction in the area of the upper launch. With time you should be able to figure out a correction factor for the lower launches. It should be especially useful on days when there is southerly flow near the launch despite WNW winds in the channel. This sensor should allow you to see when/if this shift occurs.

This blog from several years ago explains the issue: https://blog.weatherflow.com/west-coast-wind-blog-part-1-3rd-aves-shifting-battle-lines/

Please post or send your observations as you use this sensor to help us improve the forecasts: mike@iwindsurf.com

I got a few mails asking about the location of the new sensor. The image below shows its site on the post closest to the water near the upper launch.
