Has anyone tried to bring a windsurf board on Delta since they changed their baggage policies? This is their policy:

Windsurfing Checked Bag Requirements and Fees

Standard baggage allowance and fees based on cabin and travel region apply
Windsurfing boards weighing over 50 lbs. will be charged the applicable excess weight fee
If the outside linear dimensions (length + width + height) exceed 115 linear inches (292 cm), the item will not be accepted
Items in excess of baggage allowance will be subject to additional or overweight baggage fees
Boards are allowed up to two boards per bag

It doesn't seem possible to bring a windsurf board other than a bare 69L board.

Other options include renting, taking up kiting, and buying upon arrival and selling when you leave if for a long trip. The only gear I take when flying is helmet and harness, but then I'm flying to a destination ripe with gear.

If you have a American Express Platinum or higher card use it to book your fight, with the Platinum you get unlimited free baggage. I have rolled up to American Airlines, United, Delta, and Alaska checked all of my gear bags @ $25 per bag no questions asked. My largest check in so far is 2 coffin board bags ( 2 sailboards, 2 surfboards, 2 booms, Free diving gear, and beach chairs) and a quiver bag (4 sails, masts, mast extensions, bases, and all of the rest of the misc.) I also tip $10 per bag, that helps a lot when the curbside valet has the choice to either send you and your gear up to the check-in counter or just check your stuff in. I also cannot stress how important it is to check in early, check in an hour to an hour an a half early no problems, show up 30 minutes before the flight leaves and well your better off renting.

I have American Express Platinum, but Delta says nothing over 115 linear inches can go.
