Back on track.....
2000. Working at a windsurf/kitesurf shop.
30+ death worldwide the previous year. Half were advanced.
In 1995, whitewater claimed 17 deaths by drowning.
In contrast, 6 years of motocross racing. One death [heart attack], multiple major knee injuries, lots of broken fingers. That's over 200 organized race events. 3 major broken vertabraes.

What I learned is that all the data was from one study in the Netherlands for two years. And fewer kiters came into the hospital because only a few survived getting to a higher level in the sport.

My knee surgeon was sitting on the rocks at the Gorge/Hatchery checking out the kiting scene with the intent of getting into it. In a short spell, he watched two kiters fly into the boulders and the parking lot. He stabilized both prior to their evacuations, and has since repaired several more smashed kiter pelvises. He said our pelvises just aren't strong enough to handle the forces generated by landing at high forward speed from heights.

Needless to say, he abandoned the idea of kiting.
