Several days ago the NYT did a nice piece on what is happening with inflation and supply side issues. As usual, itbis more than one thing. But a 20% increase in retail spending is a big part of it. Of course, if you’re a shill for pig oil you’ll blame Biden.
Of course, some of this is from stimulus spending, which has increased income. |

Wanna unplug supply chain issues in Ca ports? Mobilize the national guard to drive trucks. Hell there's got to be a way to stop the madness! |

This particular problem has been building for years. Shippers rely on "independent" truckers. They are paid for piece work, not by the hour. So if they have to wait for hours to pick up a box, they're getting peanuts. If they can haul anything else, they will.
Not so easy to drive a big rig. |

Also for a truck to enter the Port of Oakland or San Pedro they need to be
A) The truck needs to be 2011 or newer ( A new truck is 200 grand )CARB rule.
B) The truck needs to be in the (STEP) Secure Truck Enrollment Program permit cost.
C)The drive needs a TWIC cards more cost and Qualifications required.
This makes it even harder to drive a truck.
So I think a lot of trucker just pass on hauling in or out of the ports. |

When you think about it, it appears that America's past reluctance to spend on infrastructure for so many years is finally catching up with us. With so much manufacturing these days happening elsewhere in the world, our limited ports of entry and choked distribution networks are readily revealing our weaknesses right now. With the impact of the Covid19 pandemic in the mix, it's a recipe for disaster and higher costs.
It's ironic that the Republican majority in both houses of Congress were clearly against renewed infrastructure investment, and what finally did pass was significantly diluted to be far less than what we really need. Should Republicans do well in 2022 elections and take control of one or both houses of Congress, they will likely look to reversing robust government infrastructure spending rather than considering more of it. I can see America moving in the wrong direction with Republicans in power. You reap what you sow. |

The amount that goes onto trains (intermodal) is much higher in Los Angeles/Long Beach than in Oakland. The main reason is the better (faster and cheaper) train connections to points east. |
