this is very individualized as what works for someone, won't necessarily work for you. I've tried Glacier gloves, Dakine mitts, hyperflex 5 mm mitts, a NRS precurved glove and all of them caused my forearms to cramp within 5-10 minutes. I now use Neilpryde Armor skin gloves which have been great for me. I can sail for 30-45" intervals no problems at all with cramping.
hope this helps.

Used Dakine mitts with finger tips draining hole (couldn't keep them fully water tight) in the coldest waters.

Had another pair for intermediate coldness where the palms were cut open.

Their grip does wear out with time and correct size can make a difference.

Forearm cramping can be caused by several things:
- slippery boom, clean and sand down
- adjust sail trim or harness lines position
- more board volume, possibly taller fin for more lift
- harness line length, boom height to maximize harness support
- more slidey board shape

I have the NP 3 finger (lobster claw) mitts 5mm. Been using these for the past two winters. ProbBly the best mitts I ever used. At 5mm they feel like they are 2mm. Zero hand fatigued. WArm. Today was sailing in air temp 32F (water mid 30’s). Hands were fine. Tip…you need to flood them . If your hand are dry…they will get cold.

Anyhow…buddy of mine got rip curl 5mm gloves (the flash bomb ones) …he did one or two runs and that was it. Hands/forearms fatigued. So useless .

Second best mitts …the dakine mitts with the very thin palms.

Maybe even more than aging, cold sensitivity in our hands and feet increases with exposure of our hands and feet to ... cold. I prefer bare feet down to 46 degrees, but a doctor told me to STOP IT. Seems that even if WE don't mind cold (but still functional) feet, our FEET don't like cold feet. Even well short of frostbite, it does damage at the cellular and capillary levels. Those extremely itchy (worse than poison ivy/oak) red rashes (chillblains) that appear (and persist for weeks) after a good session in 46-degree water are like a suntan in that they are indication of permanent damage.

Craig ... they're meant for our HANDS, not our feet. Smile
