1991 3-Cam Sailworks Race. I used to ride it in 25-30 it on a Hi-per-tech 7'10" but now it's strictly for foiling. Switched out the cams so I can use it on a Nolimitz RDM. Falling apart but I love it. |

I didn't HATE the one I demoed for a few days, but it sure as heck wasn't what I was looking for. I chose it instead of other demo options because it was less skatey (i.e., it tracked better) than its nearest competitors, yet it was still far too skatey for me. I love loose, but I also want my board to go where *I* choose, rather than having a mind of its own. I'm sure it's fine for spinny tricks, but that's not my cup of tea ... appropriate because it sailed much like a saucer. |

Interesting, I'm a big Open Ocean fan, but...……..I sailed a larger Kode
(think it was 95 ltrs) on Maui at Kanaha on a 5.7 day with mushy wind
swell (maybe they were waves) I loved that board in those conditions.
Felt very much at home on that board. I understand the bigger Kodes
are more freeride and less wavy than the smaller Kodes though.

p.s. unless you find some NOS (no not nitrous) you'll be hunting the used
market for both Real Wind and OO. I have one of the final years production
OOs as my big board. It has to be close to 100 ltrs, and is a great ride for
really gusty holey Gorge conditions (or when the wind is a long way off
shore like it can be late in the day). I ride that baby from 6.2 to 5.2

A fabulous board. Old school , yea, but to me the most comfortable, great sailing boards. I've tried the newer styles, In fact bought a fairly new starboard Code, hated it. I've been windsurfing since 1984, love and addicted to it. The Open Ocean is my high wind board. Tri fins on all my boards. |

I suspect the modern boards better in moderate conditions, while pre '04 better in higher winds.
This is general, as there are plenty of examples of contrary boards around. |

If ya'll gonna be hatin' on the Starboard "Code", can you please spell the name properly?
I have a 72 liter KODE which I purchased the first year of production. It's my big board for the Gorge. I think it's fantastic.
As my dear departed Momma always said: "To each their own." |

2010 Fanaic Hawk, 65 cm wide & 245 cm long is the only board that I take everywhere I go. It is a freestyle-slalom board; dedicated supercross board. Paired with some True Convert fins & Naish Force sails & you have a great B&J board good for old-school freestyle. Throw a few MFC Liquid Pro’s along with some Naish Sprint’s and you have a sweet freeride blaster.
The Hawk isn’t my favorite or most used board, but if I could only keep one board it would be the Hawk.

as a heavyweight in typically an inconsistent light wind area near Montreal ...
my fave boards are my 1995 Mistral Equipe II XR
and 2008 Fanatic Shark 145 HRS
still trying to figure out what is next going down in size and up in wind
have a 2000 Fanatic BEE 124 LTD that needs to see more water !!!
as an older board I find it a bit long, but man, it flies
on the ice and snow my favourite is my homemade ice sled that I made in 2010

Fanatic X-Ray from 2001. First new windsurf board I ever bought, I sold it 3 years ago but that thing was a lot of fun.

Kona One Design (I have two): because I love racing them in the fickle winds we have in the Midwest. Starboard Start & Kona Hula because the few beginners I teach deserve to the best for learning quickly (even though they don't get the best teacher) & when the weather is cold I sail the Start or Hula to avoid spending time in seriously cold water. (I do have & use drysuits.)
When windsurfing started it was about sailing; that is what it still is for me. Sometime in May I'll begin my 38th on water season. |
