Kevin McCarthy’s ‘joke’ about Trump and Putin, six years later

Quote:
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s choice of words has gotten him into trouble on several occasions. Indeed, the California Republican might’ve even become Speaker of the House had he not accidentally told the truth about his party’s Benghazi committee.

But if we were creating a greatest hits collection for the GOP leader, one quote — uttered exactly six years ago today — would probably claim the #1 slot on the list. The Washington Post reported several years ago:

A month before Donald Trump clinched the Republican nomination, one of his closest allies in Congress — House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy — made a politically explosive assertion in a private conversation on Capitol Hill with his fellow GOP leaders: that Trump could be the beneficiary of payments from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

On June 15, 2016, McCarthy told his fellow Republicans, “There’s two people I think Putin pays: Rohrabacher and Trump.” (Former Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher earned a reputation as one of Russia’s biggest congressional supporters.) McCarthy added at the time, “Swear to God.”

According to the recording, then-House Speaker Paul Ryan immediately interjected, insisting that the assembled Republicans — some of whom were heard laughing at the comments — not tell anyone about what McCarthy had just said.

“No leaks,” Ryan said at the time, adding, “This is how we know we’re a real family here.”

A year later, a recording of McCarthy’s comments leaked.

Initially, GOP officials swore up and down that McCarthy never said any such thing, but when told about the tape, they quickly switched gears, acknowledged McCarthy’s quote, but said he was kidding.

GOP leaders mortified by colleagues supporting Trump insurrection: new NYT audio

When the recording came to public light, a separate Washington Post analysis added, “It is quite possible that McCarthy did not mean that he really, truly thought Trump was cashing checks from Putin. Perhaps he made the comment to illustrate his belief that Trump was metaphorically in Putin’s pocket. That’s not much better — and it’s a theory that would explain why Republicans wanted to keep the comment secret and then falsely claimed that McCarthy never said it.”

Six years later, the House GOP leader probably prefers not to remember his “joke,” but like his line on the Benghazi committee, McCarthy’s mistake was telling an inconvenient truth. Indeed, Trump spent four years in the White House proving that McCarthy had a point, defending Putin, and aligning his administration’s policies with Russia’s wishes.

Trump’s own director of national intelligence, Dan Coats, ultimately suggested to Bob Woodward that he couldn’t shake the suspicion that Trump was beholden to Putin.

What’s more, while it’s become fashionable in some Republican circles to pretend that Trump’s Russia scandal has somehow been discredited, reality tells a different story: This was a genuine scandal about a Republican presidential candidate whose political operation sought, embraced, capitalized on, and lied about assistance from a foreign adversary — and then took steps to obstruct the investigation into the foreign interference.

Over the course of his unfortunate congressional career, McCarthy has been wrong about a great many things. But when it came to Trump and Putin, six years ago today, he was right.

Trump made a secret call to Vladimir Putin just before the 2020 election, report says

Quote:
Trump's relationship with Putin has long been a source of rumor and controversy.

It was the subject of a lengthy investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who ultimately found that evidence did not substantiate charges Trump and his campaign colluded with Russia to win the 2016 election.

Mueller though did conclude that Russia sought to help Trump win that election. In 2021, a US intelligence report found that Russia had sought to influence the election by channeling damaging disinformation about Biden through Trump allies.

Holder has handed over months of interviews he filmed with Trump and his family to the House committee investigating Trump's attempt to overturn his 2020 defeat. The existence of the tapes reportedly surprised Trump aides, who only learnt of them when they were subpoenaed by the House committee this week.

Strzok: ‘Triple Russian threat’ at ‘unhinged’ Trump WH meeting

Quote:
Fmr. FBI counterintelligence deputy Peter Strzok describes the “concerning” national security risk posed by three election deniers with significant connections to Russia who attended the heated White House meeting on Dec. 18, 2020, pushing options to overturn the election that were “extraordinary in terms of its threat to the nation,” he says. “This isn’t a past threat.”

Russian state TV host rages that DOJ might put 'our Trump' in prison for trying to steal election

Quote:
Russian state TV host Evgeny Popov this week expressed outrage that the United States Department of Justice might indict former President Donald Trump for trying to illegally remain in power after losing the 2020 election to President Joe Biden.

As reported by The Daily Beast's Julia Davis, Popov reacted with dismay to reports that the DOJ has started asking witnesses at a grand jury investigation questions about Trump's actions in the days leading up to and during the January 6th Capitol riots.

"The Department of Justice opened a criminal case against our own Donald Trump!" he said, according to Davis's translation. "They're investigating Trump's actions before the storming of the Capitol last January and his attempts to nullify the outcome of a fake, unfair, falsified U.S. presidential election."

Popov then claimed that any prosecution of Trump would be purely political.

"They're trying to pull it off by the midterms in order to put Trump behind bars by November," he charged. "Otherwise, the Democrats have no chance of winning. So the Democrats have decided to eliminate their biggest competitor -- our Trump."

Popov then mocked President Joe Biden for suffering politically from the higher gas prices that surged in no small part thanks to Russia's invasion of Ukraine earlier this year, and he said that Democrats don't care about solving real problems, but only "about perverts, the sexual education of children and protections of the transgenders."

Popov then praised Trump for mocking "the transgenders" in sports.

MIAMI — The Russian man with a trim beard and patterned T-shirt appeared in a Florida political group’s YouTube livestream in March, less than three weeks after his country had invaded Ukraine, and falsely claimed that what had happened was not an invasion.

“I would like to address the free people around the world to tell you that Western propaganda is lying when they say that Russia invaded Ukraine,” he said through an interpreter.

His name was Aleksandr Viktorovich Ionov, and he described himself as a “human rights activist.”

Rudy Giuliani's lawyer says he had 'no idea' a Ukrainian oligarch's company bankrolled his travel expenses

Giuliani's lawyer, Bob Costello, said his client had "no idea" Firtash paid for those trips in 2019.
Firtash's lawyer, Lanny Davis, said his client didn't authorize the expenses and attributed them to an assistant's "error."

Here are all the people who sought preemptive pardons from Donald Trump after the Capitol riot, per January 6 committee witnesses
At least nine people close to Donald Trump reportedly requested preemptive pardons following Jan. 6.
Former Trump aides named six GOP lawmakers while testifying before the Jan. 6 panel this month.
A former aide also said Mark Meadows and Rudy Giuliani asked the then-president for pardons.
At least six Republican members of Congress requested preemptive pardons from former President Donald Trump in the wake of the Capitol insurrection, according to testimony from former Trump aides last Thursday.

The House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, riot has hosted six public hearings so far revealing their findings, which also included public damning testimony from former staffers in the Trump administration.

GOP Reps. Matt Gaetz and Marjorie Taylor Greene were among the six GOP lawmakers also asked Trump to pardon them for their efforts in trying to overturn the 2020 election.

During a surprise hearing on Tuesday, June 28, Cassidy Hutchinson, a former White House aide, also testified that former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani and former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows were among those who asked the former president for a preemptive pardon after the pro-Trump mob descended upon the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Hutchinson also previously testified that former Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio had discussed pardons with the White House but never asked for one.

On Sunday, Jordan responded to his mention during the hearing, accusing the January 6 House panel of "misrepresenting" a video clip of him saying "the ultimate date of significance is Jan. 6 in a presidential election in determining the winner."

"This committee, I think the country understands, is purely partisan," Jordan said. "And they're frankly not paying much attention to what's being said."

Here are all of the people who sought a pardon from Trump following the Capitol riot, per testimony:

Read the original article on Business Insider
A company owned by a prominent Ukrainian oligarch covered thousands of dollars in former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani's travel expenses in the summer of 2019, The New York Times reported.

At the time, Giuliani was working as President Donald Trump's personal lawyer and spearheading an effort to dig up dirt on the Biden family in Ukraine.

According to The Times, in the summer of 2019, Firtash's company bankrolled Giuliani's stay at a five-star hotel and also arranged for him to fly on a private jet.

Robert Costello, Giuliani's lawyer, told The Times that his client had "no idea that Firtash was paying for those trips" and that "he certainly would not have allowed it if he had known."

Firtash's lawyer, Lanny Davis, also said that "as far as Mr. Firtash knew, he never paid for or authorized any funds to be paid for Giuliani."

Davis attributed the payments to "an inadvertent error" by one of Firtash's assistants, The Times said, who didn't notice Giuliani's expenses and paid for them "without Mr. Firtash's knowledge or authority."

The payments themselves do not appear to have violated any laws. But Giuliani's broader campaign to dig up dirt on the Bidens came under prosecutorial scrutiny in 2019 as investigators began examining whether he broke foreign lobbying laws.

Specifically, the Manhattan US attorney's office wanted to know if Giuliani's efforts in Ukraine were carried out solely in his capacity as Trump's lawyer or whether he was also working on behalf of foreign interests who believed they would benefit from Trump's reelection.

News of the investigation broke in October 2019, but it entered an aggressive new phase in April 2021 when FBI agents raided Giuliani's apartment, his office, and the home of Victoria Toensing, an associate of his in Washington, DC. They seized 18 electronic devices belonging to Giuliani and also seized devices belonging to his longtime personal assistant Jo Ann Zafonte.

Last year, it also surfaced that prosecutors had secured a search warrant in November 2019 to scour Giuliani's iCloud account as part of their investigation.

Costello sent a letter to the judge overseeing the case raising "serious concern over the broad and sweeping nature of the searches executed on an attorney's home and law office, and the covert search and review of the same attorney's iCloud account in 2019," as well as the government's decision not to inform Giuliani about the search until a year and a half later.

Costello's letter also revealed that prosecutors felt "there is reason to believe that notification of the existence of this warrant will result in destruction of or tampering with evidence, and/or tamping [sic] with potential witnesses, or otherwise will seriously jeopardize an ongoing investigation."

The Times reported this week that the investigation has since wound down and will likely close without any charges filed against the former New York mayor. Giuliani met with prosecutors in February and answered their questions, a move his lawyers would not have allowed if they believed he was in legal jeopardy. Investigators also recently returned Giuliani's devices to him, according to The Times, a sign that they did not discover anything incriminating in their search.

Marsha Blackburn blocks bills that would ensure foreign countries can't interfere with American elections

Quote:
Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) is behind an effort to block bills that could ensure US elections are more secure, Axios reported Monday.

The bills were Sen. Mark Warner's (D-VA) plan to ensure that after the Russian interference in the 2016 election, a foreign country could never do it again. According to Blackburn, however, they're a "federal power grab."

One of the bills would make campaigns call the FBI if they were ever approached by a foreign power and offered election assistance. During the 2016 election, Trump's campaign was offered "dirt" on opponent Hillary Clinton, and operatives met with the person offering the information in Trump Tower.

A different bill would fund the Election Assistance Commission, which would ensure that voting machines weren't connected to the internet. Republicans claimed after the 2020 election that the machines were being hacked and that was how foreign countries were able to decide U.S. elections.

The Senate Intelligence Committee released the third section of their report on the security of the election in 2016 and noted that it was "not well-postured" to counter it again. At the same time, the intelligence community has been warning that there aren't the necessary protections in place to ensure American elections are as secure as they could be. FBI Director Christopher Wray testified before Congress that Russia continues its "informational warfare" campaign as the midterm elections approach.

"[Democrats] are attempting to bypass this body’s Rules Committee on behalf of various bills that will seize control over elections from the states and take it from the states and where do they want to put it?" Blackburn complained. "They want it to rest in the hands of Washington, D.C., bureaucrats."

Most state and local election offices don't have the staff or resources available to protect against international hackers or foreign spies.

Back to your original thread topic ... if that's what it takes to get a productive, conscious POTUS, so be it. Anything short of nuclear war would be better for the country and the world than the socialist, woke fools running this administration.
