it has been over 20 years since I have been to Corpus. I was fortunate enough to live in Texas when windsurfing from 1985 - 2003 when I moved to California. Now getting back to the sport and thinking of spending March or April in Corpus area.
It appears to me from Facebook that folks are no longer sailing in the Bay? I cannot imagine that. I guess Bird Island or the Flats is now the place? good news, flat and shallow for me to re-learn. is this true? what is the scene like now? I assume it has been taken over by kiters and foils, but I have no interest in those. |

hi. I go to Bird Island for a month every April. Kiting not allowed there, but plenty of folks on wings with foils as well as windsurfers with foils. Both seem to out number windsurfers with fins. I go there for the warm and mostly flat water with steady wind. Park about 20' from the water's edge. The camping area changed a few years ago when they added fairly large boulders and rocks to stop erosion, but that just makes it a little harder to get to the water from a camp site. I rent a condo. If you rent, it is cheaper to rent for a month than 2-3 weeks as then you don't pay a room tax and most condos offer deals for renting a month at a time. A lot of folks camp right at Bird, but you then have to leave after 2 weeks, I believe. Some folks just move over to another campground and some head down to South Padre. There is no electricity or showers there, but they did build a block rest room. Shop is still there, Worldwinds, and now owned and operated by Olivier, who is great. The other good thing about Bird is the National Senior Park pass gets you free admission, you just have to show your pass and id each time you pass through the kiosk. I have never sailed the Bay or the Flats, but a lot of locals still do. |

Well that’s good to know that there’s no kiting at bird Island. I. How old do you have to be for a senior pass? I’m 55 so I probably don’t qualify but whatever. I have camped out many many times in my 20s at Rhode Island and have great memories of the place. For me this is my reentry to the sport after 20 years and I just can’t think of a better place to get my skills back in order |
