SDWA (San Diego Windsurfing Assosiation) including the Seal Beach formula sailors are planning a race to Catalina this summer. We still just talking about it but would be great to combine the two so we all have fun.
I know I am in with Peter Bonello (who is an experienced long distance racer) and only need a day notice.
So lets do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Very Happy

Hi Gabor (and all),
The "SDWA" crossing will not be an official or sanctioned event. Just friends making a safe "fun race" adventure crossing. For our part, it will be 2 or 3 teams (of 2-3 per team) sharing a rig and trading 4-5 mile legs across from LA Harbor to The Itshmus, or close to it as possible as the wind tends to funnel through the Isthmus causing a beat the last few miles. We will have at least two support sportfishers, 26' and 29' that will "leap frog" the racers across the channel; one acting as a moving "mark" and the other shadowing/chasing the racers. The racers reach the mark, and then switch participants while the chase boat moves ahead to become the next mark...and so on. Safe 1st. No solo crossers on our part, not the 1st time at least (Gabor!). We are planing the 3 teams to be San Diego, LA, and Nor Cal. Any others and we would need an additional chase boat per team.

The SDWA guys sound pretty organized. But I would limit people more on time than on distance. If it's blowing 15 and you are wound-up and comfortable, 22 miles would not be a problem for one person. If it's a slog-fest, then even 4 miles would be tiring.

Just remember it is incredibly easy to lose people in the open ocean. You can take your eyes off someone for a second and they are gone. Unless you have done something like this before be very, very conservative. Stay together so that the chase boat can watch everyone. There is nothing worse than being in a chase boat and having sailor 1 sail off on port tack at 20 knots, and sailor 2 sail off on starboard. Who do you follow?

Have someone double-check all your gear before hand, replace worn out-hauls, check universals, harness lines etc. Take some spare rope. Wear a helmet if you have one.
Have some kind of waterproof flare or something to make yourself visible if it all goes bad.

I did a long-distance ocean-race once, and my universal broke. What a nightmare, if was a long, lonely 30 minutes in a big ocean waiting to get rescued. In fact they cancelled the race after that year as so many people misjudged the conditions and needed rescuing.
