Former US attorney calls for 'full investigation' after report Secret Service failed to share Pelosi

Quote:
The Secret Service has come under fire in recent months over deleted text messages from the days surrounding January 6th. New reports and accusations that they failed to share intelligence it had detailing a violent threat against Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and other top Democrats. Let’s listen to former Secret Service agent Jonathan Wackrow in a recent CNN interview describe just some of the issues now facing the Secret Service in regards to their handling of the January 6th insurrection.

The investigation of the Secret Service’s missing text messages isn’t the only challenge the agency is facing. A new report from Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, or CREW, finds the Secret Service discovered a violent social media based threat on January 4, 2021, two days before the insurrection, but did not share that intelligence with the Capitol Police until nearly 6:00 PM ET on January 6. Pelosi was at the Capitol on the 6th without any knowledge of the recent explicit comments which called for her harm.

The social media posting the Secret Service had discovered was from Dec. 31, 2020, and included Pelosi among a list of "Enemies," along with comments such as "January 6 starts #1776 all over again!!" and "Fight for EVERYTHING." The list, which was posted by a Parler user, also included Joe Biden, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. A former U.S. Attorney is calling for a full investigation into the U.S. Secret Service’s failure to share intelligence it had detailing the violent threats. Joyce Vance, who is now a law professor and MSNBC/NBC News legal analyst tweeted on Wednesday, “This is deeply disturbing and requires a full investigation. The Capitol Police are responsible for protecting the Speaker.” Vance continues. “If true” that the U.S. Secret Service “failed to pass on intelligence about threats, that’s very alarming.”

Jan. 6 committee believes former Secret Service agent Tony Ornato was responsible for attempts to discredit Cassidy Hutchinson's testimony, CNN reported

Quote:
Rep. Adam Kinzinger accused former Secret Service agent Tony Ornato of trying to discredit Cassidy Hutchinson.
The Republican told CNN this week that members of the Jan. 6 panel believe Ornato led the charge.
Ornato retired in August — two months after he emerged as a key figure in Hutchinson's testimony.
Members of the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot believe former Secret Service agent Tony Ornato was personally involved in efforts to discredit former Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson's testimony, according to a report from CNN.

Rep. Adam Kinzinger, one of two Republican members of Congress on the committee, told the outlet this week that representatives on the panel think Ornato led the charge in contradicting parts of Hutchinson's public testimony earlier this year while he was still at the agency and additional, unnamed agents then backed his claims.

The longtime Secret Service agent who ran former President Donald Trump's security detail left the agency last month, saying in a statement that he retired in order to pursue a career in the private sector.

Ornato emerged as a key figure in Hutchinson's bombshell testimony before the committee in June.

Hutchinson testified that Ornato told her Trump had tried to grab the steering wheel of the vehicle he was traveling in and lunged at a Secret Service agent while demanding to be taken to the Capitol during the chaos of January 6, 2021, as he said, "I'm the effing president!"

In the aftermath of Hutchinson's testimony, anonymous sources began to reject her version of events in the press. Several media outlets reported that Secret Service agents were willing to testify that Trump did not try to lunge at them or take control of the vehicle on January 6 — though none have done so publicly.

Now, Kinzinger is accusing Ornato of being one of the anonymous culprits behind the backlash.

"I just think it's so important to keep in mind that, through quote, anonymous sources, which we believe to be actually Tony Ornato himself, he pushed back against Cassidy Hutchinson's testimony and said, it's just not true and Tony will testify under oath. And then, of course, has not come in to testify under oath," the Republican told CNN.

Kate Driscoll, a lawyer for Ornato did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment, but told CNN that her client plans to "continue cooperating in the investigations related to the events of January 6."

In response to pushback against Hutchinson's initial testimony, Rep. Liz Cheney, who is the top Republican on the January 6 panel, threw her full support behind Hutchinson and a DC police officer later backed up her claims, testifying that Trump had a "heated exchange" with his security team after they refused to drive him to the Capitol amid the insurrection.

CNN reported this week that investigators have also learned new information about a series of deleted Secret Service test messages regarding the Capitol attack, citing anonymous sources who said it's unclear whether the texts are recoverable.

A spokesperson with the Secret Service pointed Insider to the agency's June 30th statement in response to Hutchinson's testimony:

"As we have done in the past, the United States Secret Service will make individuals with first-hand knowledge of the conversations and interactions referenced by the Committee available for sworn testimony. We are awaiting the opportunity to do so."

Ex-Oath Keeper Testifies In Jan. 6 Sedition Trial That Group Had Secret Service Contact

Quote:

Aformer member of the far-right Oath Keepers testified as a witness in federal court on Thursday that he believed the group’s founder, Elmer Stewart Rhodes, was in communication with a U.S. Secret Service agent in the months before the Capitol riot.

The former Oath Keeper, John Zimmerman, told the courtroom that he heard Rhodes’ side of a phone call with the agent ― or someone who represented themselves as an agent ― at a September 2020 rally for then-President Donald Trump in North Carolina.

Asked whether Rhodes had any direct contact with Trump, however, he responded, “Not that I recall specifically,” according to Business Insider.

Zimmerman, of North Carolina, formerly operated a supply store called Prepper JAKZ for people seeking to prepare for the collapse of society.

Rhodes and four others linked to his extremist organization are currently standing trial on seditious conspiracy charges for their alleged parts in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack. They face up to 20 years behind bars for what prosecutors say was a carefully planned effort to stop the peaceful transfer of presidential power from Trump to Joe Biden.

The House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on Congress and attempt to overthrow the 2020 election brought in the spokesperson of the Secret Service to answer questions about the testimony of Cassidy Hutchinson.

The Washington Post reported that spokesman Anthony Guglielmi was asked about statements the Secret Service sent out that undercut the sworn testimony Hutchinson gave about what she was told by Donald Trump's detail head and his deputy chief of staff.

Tony Ornato, had taken a leave from the Secret Service to join Trump's staff and serve as a liaison between the two. Speaking to the committee, Hutchinson testified that Ornato claimed Trump tried to grab the steering wheel while in the SUV traveling from the rally at the Ellipse back to the White House. Trump wanted to go to the Capitol but his agents refused because it couldn't be secured.

After her comments, the Secret Service released statements claiming she didn't know what she was talking about.

"As we have done in the past, the United States Secret Service will make individuals with first-hand knowledge of the conversations and interactions referenced by the Committee available for sworn testimony. We are awaiting the opportunity to do so," the statement said.

It was something that Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) was concerned was the influence of Ornato, attempting to discredit her.

"I just think it's so important to keep in mind that, through quote, anonymous sources, which we believe to be actually Tony Ornato himself, he pushed back against Cassidy Hutchinson's testimony and said, it's just not true and Tony will testify under oath. And then, of course, has not come in to testify under oath," he said in an interview with CNN in September.

Trump's detail head Richard Engel has disputed Hutchinson's account of what happened in the SUV, though it was confirmed by a DC Metro Police officer who confirmed a "heated exchange."

Ornato and Engel have since left the Secret Service and retained private counsel.

The committee hasn't released information about Guglielmi or what he testified.

another good example of enforcement... these DC police officers need to be fired.

Former counterintelligence officer for the FBI, Frank Figliuzzi, was furious hearing the report.

"This is the real disgrace," he said during an appearance on MSNBC. "The issue is the culture that still continues at the Police Department in the District of Columbia. These were true heroes honored for fighting for democracy. If the special operations division don't understand what a hero is, don't understand what it means to fight for democracy, they need to find another job. They can start with the donut shop that they hang out at every single morning. And they can apply for jobs there."

you right wingers must hate when I post topics like this that are proven with these recent findings. I have profiled you haters to a T.

Secret Service Members Found To Be Part of Far-Right Extremist Group—Report

Quote:
Members of the Secret Service have been found to be part of the far-right extremist group the Oath Keepers, according to documents reviewed by the Project On Government Oversight (POGO) and the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP).

A leaked membership list reportedly shows that seven Oath Keepers said they worked or previously worked for the Secret Service, according to files dating from 2009 to 2015.

The membership list was obtained as part of a leak of Oath Keeper documents, according to OCCRP, and were provided by "a former member of the group's inner circle" who requested anonymity because of ongoing federal investigations.

More than 300 members of the Oath Keepers identified themselves as current or former employees of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) or affiliated agencies in the documents seen by POGO and OCCRP.

Representative Bennie Thompson (D-MS), chairman of the House of Representatives' Select Committee investigating January 6, 2021, issued an emailed statement to the investigative groups about their findings.

"Extremism within our government is always alarming, but even more so in a department with a law enforcement and national security nexus like DHS," Thompson's statement said, according to POGO and OCCRP.
