All,

The goal of the WETA Ferry project is to have 915 weekday ferry commuters and 1746 weekend ferry riders pass through a new $83.5 million dollar terminal located near the base of the old Berkeley pier. The parking to support this would be 251 spaces on the Hs Lordships peninsula, with hopes that the remaining 73% of weekday and 86% of weekend ferry riders would arrive without cars.
I am afraid that enough of them will arrive with cars to overflow into the South Cove parking lot and make it very hard to sail from there. And traffic leaving the Marina will be a mess.
The City Council loves the ferry idea, and is in negotiations with WETA to proceed with the project.
If you agree that this is a bad idea, please sign the MoveOn.org petition:

MoveOn gets your email address, but it's quick to unsubscribe.
We presently have 495 signatures, 500 or more would be great!
There is lots of info on the Marina Meetings thread. It might be a good entertainment for these windless winter days!

In addition to the adverse effects on recreation--the marina is a park--the ferries rely on massive subsidies. Before the pandemic, their fares of $14 captured only half of the operating costs, and none of the capital costs. That's a subsidy of more than $3000 per seat a year in the operational costs alone! In Berkeley, they don't propose to add the cost of the terminal to the rate. At a 3% discounting rate, the lowest recommended by the Office of Management and Budget, that would be over $3 million a year. That's nearly $10 per ride--another $2500 per seat per year. Then there is the free rent for the parking lot in the marina. The City could build a restaurant, perhaps two, on that space, and generate about $200,000 in rent for the marina fund. Oh, what's another buck of subsidy.

The City Council continues its love affair with the WETA ferry project.

If you have sailed in the South Basin this summer, you have probably noticed that the south cove parking lots have been full on many weekends and even weekdays. This is without adding 915 weekday/1746 weekend ferry riders to compete for the 251 ferry spaces and the 200 South Cove recreational spaces. Looks to me like a train wreck coming.

With council elections coming up in November, it would be a good time to up the total number of signers on the petition to 1000. So if you haven't signed already, please do!
