TBH. I have no idea if this is a nutty idea because I have no idea IF and HOW reparations will be provided.
If you go to a car dealership and they tell you a car is x amount you don’t just pay for it that instant if you don’t have the money in your pocket. And, you want to be sure the cost is right. It’s sorta like that. And, maybe you can’t afford the car. This study determined the damages to a group of our population. They are real.
The question then is. How can we really repay for this generational loss of wealth? Obviously, writing a check for $223k is not workable. What doesn’t work is to continue the same way we have for generations with many of the policies that your party favors. |

Wow, a sensible response, thank you. I have no answer as to how to right the wrongs from the past, but $223K for the black population (assuming anyone could figure out who is or isn't a descendent of slaves) demonstrated the crazy liberal thinking in Calif. That's my point.
And if this ever did happen, how many of those receiving the money would bail from the workforce and sit by enjoying their newfound wealth? We need to encourage more people back into the workforce, not encourage them to leave. |

Techno. I don't disagree that a one time payment of $223K is not a good idea. Has anyone, actually, proposed this? As far as I can tell, this commission was tasked with determining the damages to an individual due to systematic discrimination in housing, wages, education, health care. Now, that a number has been determined, it's time to figure our what, if anything, can be done to right the wrong.
There are a lot of different ways to work on this. We could look at tax breaks, health insurance premium reductions, educational credits, child care incentives. We should also look at what business institutions (banks) discriminated and how we can look at trying to engage them in reducing interest on mortgages.
The issue that irks me, and maybe others on this forum is that you brought this commission study as a way to say that California is 'nutty" for even studying the issue. Do you propose sweeping this history under a rug and denying that it existed? |

I disagree with the concept that monetary reparations should be made in the manner suggested in the opinion piece or the Calif. study. Happy now Teach?
However, if such monetary reparations are to be made, they should be paid by the individuals or entities who have profited from human exploitation. They should not be paid by those who did not profit. As a first generation American whose ancestors were of very modest means, I'm quite confident that my ancestors did not profit from such exploitation. It makes no sense to pass the burden of paying reparations to those who have clean hands.
BTW Teach, what are your thoughts on CRT?

That is the conservative way. Ban any books or speech in schools that doesn't deny any unwanted conservative history; just check out Texas & Florida. Of course you don't consider that nutty or a violation of free speech, do you Techno.

You are correct, the final report/recommendation has not been made, but it seems that the sum of $230K is the amount that each person should benefited in some way. I doubt the recommendation will be a cash settlement, but the "task force" has set the total figure at $569 billion. Who pays for that? And if by some chance this program comes to fruition, do you think the black community will then see an end to discrimination, real or just perceived, and that race relationships in Calif. will mellow out?
Eye opening facts and something to think about regarding slavery in the Americas:
Quote: | 12.5 million: The approximate number of enslaved Africans transported to the Americas between 1500 and 1866.
Less than 4: The percentage of the total number of enslaved Africans transported to the New World who were imported to the area that became the United States. |

Pretending that slavery is the only form of discrimination, and ignoring segregation, is the kind of faulty thinking that abounds in the south. |

Some idiots with guns shot up some power substations (apparently with knowledge of what to target) in NC.
Speculation on motives was one to do with a local DRAG show.
Perhaps the perpetrators were jealous because they haven't come out yet?
Or the banjos won't stop ringing in their heads?
Could've been any Beau, Boo, Bubba or Buck having just one too many Budweisers! |
