Ah, Bard Chrisman. Lovely man, and smart as a whip. Had this laconic drawl, kind of sandbagged you into thinking he wasn’t that smart. Wrong, brilliant, and one of the best slalom racers ever. Also sailed Aussie 18’s. Designed and built his own slalom boards. He ducked away, then did some kiting, and is now back as a winger. Having Bard recognize me and chat me up while I was rigging last year was like being told I really am an adult. One of the classic OG’s. Oh to have that level of talent.

Still have and still use my Tiga 254 VR from back then. Not sure what the VR stood for.

I should have gotten the E-rock after my Astro rock and would have learned how to jibe better earlier. Instead jumped over to the E series Mistral (explosion and energy) and ended up jibe impaired. Couldn’t turn those boards without a full on word cup lay down jibe. Did make me think I was pretty fast in a straight line though.

My first board was the "Red Marlin", bought in 1984 from Europa Windsurfing in Cambridge MA. Poly board with a radical double concave new shape. Came with a 6.3 sail that I used in all winds, whether my arms/shoulders agreed or not Shocked I remember Kalmus in the late 80's. F2 Comet with Gaastra 7.5 early, then my bright red custom glass Hi-Tech Masonville 9-0 Slalom Pro with Simmer Style 4.5 when the wind came up. Some of us would rig "the stack" of 3 or 4 sails, first thing, to be ready for the Kalmus legendary thermals.
