Like most places it depends on who you bring along!! When I was there 10 years ago, you could drive on the beach (from the north end of town) as far as you wanted up the island, bring the 4x4. There were folks camped in many places, right on the beach. I didnt see a real campground, maybe there is one though. |

There is a campground on the Gulf just past the last hotel. While I have not stayed there it looked as though it would be fine for RV or van camping. It may be a bit windy for tent camping. You can always bail out and stay at one of the many hotels ay least for a few nights.
Just avoid spring break unless you enjoy being over run by college students.
If the wind is good you should be able to windsurf or kite directly in front of the campground. Also it is only a short distance to other launches on the more protected sound. |

Depends on what the weathers like each night, and what kind of sleeping conditions you prefer. Ive camped at the northern end of the island (Corpus) for about 120 nights on a dozen trips over several years, and usually got very little sleep. Odd as it may sound, I dont like a constant heavy mist breezing through my RV at 80-90 degrees. We had to run our bedding through commercial dryers quite often most trips to dry it of sweat and salt fog.
Of our 120 or so nights there, Id rate maybe a fourth of them comfortable, and generally only after midnight or so.
Our trips were in March, April, and November throughout the mid-to-late 1980s. If we ever go back, it will be condo-based, despite my feeling that almost nothing beats camping beside the water near piles of windsurfing rigs.
Tip: watch your dogs like a hawk. Coyotes are a very serious threat to any dog, and skunks are a threat to campers in general, at least at NPI.

Id go for a condo - they are plentiful and cheap during the times when windsurfing is best (Apr-May, Oct-Nov). The campground is at the very southernmost tip of the island, while the windsurfing spots are a few miles further north. One good outfit that I use are dancercondorentals.com. These are all newer units and very clean. Not on the water, but some are within easy walking distance of Windsurf Inc where you can rent gear.
