Keep things simple! I use 4.2, 5.0, 5.8, 7.5.

A few years ago I met a guy from Turkey who was an excellent sailor. He had a one sail "quiver" a 7.0 which he was using on a day when winds were gusting into the low to mid 30's. I was on a 5.0.

Who is having more fun? The guy on a the huge 8.0 cambered race sail, or the guy on a 5.5 freeride no cam sail in the same wind. I like to use the smallest sail I can for the given wind. When we talk about the wind range of a sail, its almost always about the top end. " I sailed my 7.0 in 30" I look for the 5.0 or the 4.5 that I can sail in 30. The tuning of a modern no cam sail is amazing. Ease the down haul and out haul and you have tons of power with reasonable stability. Crank it tight and you get all the top end control you need. A lot of people re-rig or sit on the beach and wait rather than tune their sail a bit.

Amen. Is that what they say. I know some designers and sailors think having the biggest sail is an advantage. Maybe for them. Question My buddy bought a newer 5.7,, after testing and scratching our heads we noticed it was the same size as his old 5.2 Laughing

If you live where you encounter lots of days with winds of 9-15 mph, and you want to sail and plane, a 5.5 isn't going to cut it. That's why I have large sails and a formula board. Guys with the 5.5 freeride sails never made it to the lake.

And 30 at the Hatchery is more like 4.2 for me, a tweaked 5.5 might work,
but it's a lot more fun on a 4.2.

I have the "fat" version of your quiver. I have 4.2; 4.7; 5.2; 5.7; 6.5; 7.5. I have played in my mind with the idea of simplifying in exactly the same way, I admit, for ease of transportation purposes. But then a day comes inevitably when one of the extra sizes is the exact match for the conditions and I have given up the notion of reductions altogether. Like they say in Greece : "Austerity sucks! "

In the Gorge you get to go smaller because of current.

I lake and wave sail. I go 4.2,4.7 5.5 and 6.5. The 4.2 and 6.5 are the least used sails. If I need bigger than 6.5 I go play golf. Smaller than 4.2 I drink a beer and watch...

True that, but there is something weird about reported wind velocity in the
Hatchery area. Averaging 30 would be very strong 4.2 and probably 3.7
for me, whereas averaging 30 at The Wall would be more like solid 4.7.
But then again, I don't rig by what the meters say, I rig by how the water
looks and how the wind "feels".
