Yes it has been done at least once that I know of. A friend of mine Tom who manages a local windsurf/kite shop did the crossing solo from Cabrillo Beach about ten years ago. He said he started by just planing out for ten minutes ,then twenty minutes just to see how far he could go. Then the next time he went out for a little longer and he decided to go for it. He made it over and back in under 3hrs. as I recall. Although I admire his accomplishment I think it was rather foolish. He did it without any support whatsoever. The wind shifts around a lot in the channel and can shut down altogether. There is a shipping lane running smack dab through the middle and many predators frequent those waters . There is also a Catalina Eddy effect that can cause the wind to reverse its direction the closer you get to the Island. The crossing is actually less than the 26 miles as stated in the song. Its approx. 22 miles from Long Beach. Some of us locals have kicked around the idea a bit but the notion soon passes and we just go sailin.WS

Life Vests
Waterproof GPS
Yeah, and a support boat. But many boats cant follow windsurfers traveling 25mph in whitecaps.

Labor Day Weekend 1983
Subaru of SoCal sponsored 32 Windsurfers from Whites Point to Long Point on Catalina. Wind was 12 to start but 20 at Catalina. West wind all the way. Winning time was 1:45 mins by Andy Purmort. Jim Drake the co-inventor of windsurfing sailed in it too. We partied on Catalina and we camped at Descanso Beach. Tried to sail back after 1 day but wind was not cooperative. So we loaded up the 7 chase boats and the 70 ft motor sailer with big boards and came back
to Cabrillo. We had a great time.
spring is best time to go. 22 Boston Whaler best boat. you just need a compass straight 180 degrees South

(Randy Reynolds and John Fitzgerald hold time record of 1 hour set on a tandem board; in 1988 i think.)1982 3 guys tried to go over & back but 2 Guys couldnt make it when wind died & spent the night between the Catalina and PV they had wetsuits and survived fortunately.
Oh yeah- i put the race event together. good luck with your adventure.
