Does anybody know anything about the fire near Underwood today? I have ash falling from the sky and lots of smoke on the horizon at my house. |

It looks like Broughton Lumber is on fire. Maybe it's to clear the ground for the resort? |

Looks like the fire started on the north side of Hwy 14 opposite Cheap Beach and burned through the north side of the old Broughton mill site. Some structures must have been burnt there as the smoke was very black for a while. Lots of fire crews parked at the Hatch. The fire has now gone up the hillside and is now at the ridge line. I can't see through the smoke but I know there's houses there. I hope they are OK.
There's now a helicopter with a water bucket working the flames on the west edge of the ridge. |

Thanks for the onsite report.
You can see live video coverage at www.katu.com, look in the red section near the top, they have a link. |

I got an onsite report from the Hatchery at 1:20 pm. It is blocked off for fighting the fire so no sailing.
I'm on my way out to the Wall or Rufus . |

Its really moved up the hill in the last hour, wind has shifted to more SW and driving it up the hill. Looks like its spreading and the wind is still kicking up, supposed to continue according to the forecast till this evening.
Lots of people up there, hopefully all evacuated by now. |

Fire was caused by that railroad crew who were grinding the RR tracks... shooting sparks everywhere... I saw them working. I wonder why the railroad is allowed to do this type work when conditions are so windy & dry. I mean, duh?? People could have been killed. |

When I saw the grinder train this evening it was using a fire hose to spray water along the sides of the track and was not grinding. It makes a lot of noise even when it is not grinding. Sailed 3.7 at swell after getting kicked out of the hatch which is now the staging area for the firefighters at the bottom of the bluff. |
