As of right now, the evacuation orders have been lifted for the entirety of Hatteras Island, and RT 12 is OPEN!! Come on down and join us for some Fall sailing!

Anne and I happened to be in Nags Head yesterday afternoon when the NC DOT announced that they were about to open RT 12. We were able to drive home, which was pretty dang exciting! The ferry service has been fantastic over the last month, but it's nice to have a quicker and more reliable route.

FYI- Portions of Rodanthe, Salvo, Waves, and Avon are still in major cleanup mode, so please drive carefully, and maybe bring some non-perishable food stuffs for the food pantry, if you are willing and able. Thanks, and hope to see you soon!

Anyway, here are a few pictures of driving over the bridge:

Having had a chance for a brief visit today I'd say things look like almost back to normal. WS shops are open for business, and Canadians and Midwesteners are out and about. While Salvo/Rodanthe/Waves got roughed some, Avon looks largely untouched, ignoring some ripped out awnings and stuffs.
Here's what doesn't seem to be back up and running: The Salvo Day Use Area is closed and utilized as a dump site for rubble. Restrooms and showers at Canadian Hole are roped off. Some restaurants are closed, but I had no problem finding a fresh burger and a couple cold Coronas.
There's also the occasional destroyed trailer lined up by the wayside and some FUBARed structures and ripped out driveways. Hopefully none of the readers'.
I sailed Island Creek and it was definitely sailable. Unlike after Isabel I didn't see or (by accident) find any debris in the water. Great having been back for a day. Back to the West Coast though later this week Crying or Very sad

Yep, had my first trek down to HI (from Nags Head) this past Friday and scored an excellent sesh at Lifeguard Beach! Had an earlier afternoon sesh at Rmp 34 but wind was WSW thus near straight offshore; however, the late afternoon/early evening sesh at Lifeguard was magical. Glad I/we can get "down south" again!

PS: Perhaps Cove sesh this coming Wed?! Very Happy

PPS: To see the report including the live Bambuser report filmed at that moment following the Lifeguard Beach sesh, check out OBX Beach Life.
