The myth of white victimhood to modern racism is not, unfortunately, restricted to Iso. Trump played this grievance like a fiddle—and like Nero—tried to burn the town down.

Booing of anti-racism gesture reinforces need to take a knee

BURTON-ON-TRENT, England (AP) — What should be the perfect opening to England’s European Championship campaign — in its home stadium on a scorching summer afternoon — instead carries an element of trepidation about the reception the players will receive from their own fans.

When players took a knee before both Euro 2020 warm-up games, the response from sections of England fans was booing.

The disregard of the reasons for performing the anti-racism gesture has created a disconnect with many soccer fans viewing it as a political act.

Ahead of England’s Group D opener against Croatia on Sunday at Wembley Stadium there has even been a intervention, albeit delayed, from Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s office.

“The prime minister wants to see everybody getting behind the team to cheer them on, not boo,” the message said.

The England team appears to be frustrated for continually having to explain why they want to take a knee, as they have done in the Premier League for a year as part of calls to eradicate racial injustice following the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

“Honestly, it’s something I didn’t even really want to speak on,” England forward Raheem Sterling said at the team’s St. George’s Park team base. “If you can’t understand the meaning behind it and the cause behind it, then it’s a real disappointment to see that.”

Remains of KKK leader Nathan Bedford Forrest exhumed from Tennessee park

Quote:
The remains of Nathan Bedford Forrest, a Confederate army general, and the first grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, have been exhumed from the Health Sciences Park in Memphis, Tennessee and taken to a secret location in the western part of the state before being moved to a museum south of Nashville.

The work, carried by a group called “The Sons of Confederate Veterans” to remove the remains of the infamous slave trader began on 1 June.

While the remains were discovered on Monday, shortly after 9am, an announcement was not made until Friday in order to ensure that all artefacts had been found, Shelby County Election Commissioner Brent Taylor told reporters, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

A statue of the KKK leader was removed from the park in December 2017.

The statue and remains will be reassembled and interred at the National Confederate Museum in Columbia south of Nashville.

A “Victorian cradle” with the initials of Mr Forrest was found, leading them to the location of his remains. The graves of the general and his wife were finally found 10 feet below the park plaza. The grand wizard’s casket remained whole, but his wife’s had decayed and her remains were placed in a temporary casket.

Shelby County Commissioner Van Turner said that no discussions have yet been had on what will replace the statue.

“Let’s just let the park breathe, let’s relax a little bit and enjoy the park,” he said. “We’re going to leave it up to the Memphians and the Shelby Countians.”

The park was previously called Forrest Park and was bought by non-profit organisation Memphis Greenspace when the statue was removed in 2017.

Mr Forrest lived from 1821 to 1877. His statue was erected in 1904. His descendants were present when his remains were placed in the park in November 1904, and again generations later when the remains were removed more than 116 years later.

“We wanted this process to be respectful, to be something that healed divisions,” Mr Turner said.

“I think the Forrest family wanted the remains of their ancestor to rest in peace,” he added. “There was never going to be peace here.”

Tami Sawyer was one of the leaders behind the effort to remove the statue. She’s now one of 13 Shelby County Commissioners.

She was harassed by one of the workers exhuming the remains as she spoke to reporters. George Johnson, 46, was seen and heard singing “Dixie” and waving the Confederate flag. He called Ms Sawyer a “communist piece of s**t”.

“If you were a man, I would beat your a**,” he said, according to a police report.

He was arrested and charged with misdemeanour assault. He has since been released.

Mr Turner said the tension around the park “could have been a disaster” but that those involved were committed to working across the aisle.

“We would hope that the example showed here with the safe removal of the monuments and the safe removal of the remains will serve as an example of what we can do to move this city forward,” he added, calling it “a great day for Memphis,” according to WREG.

“We have not had the issues other cities have had,” Mr Taylor said. “We did this right.”

On March 23 of last year, with COVID just beginning its deadly rampage across America and the stock market tanking, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick took to Fox News to issue a call for sacrifice:

The economy had to stay open at all costs. If older Americans caught COVID and died, so be it.

“As a senior citizen, are you willing to take a chance on your survival in exchange for keeping the America that all America loves for your children and grandchildren?”

“If that’s the exchange, I’m all in.”

Fifteen months later, Patrick is still alive. Nearly 600,000 Americans are not.

He’s also still lieutenant governor of Texas. And while openly suggesting that wiping out the elderly to prop up the stock market struck many, myself included, as grounds for removal, if not public flogging, it’s now clear that millions across the country agreed with him — at least in spirit — and expressed that support in the form of mass revolts against social distancing, masking and business closures.

It’s easy to dismiss these attitudes as phenomena born of Trumpism, QAnon and anti-vax fervor. But clinging to the status quo — no matter how deadly, delusional or amoral — has long been part of our national character.

In December 1942, America was fighting a world war on two fronts. And it was in crisis. The Japanese army had seized the primary American supply line for rubber and we were running out. U.S. military forces were in danger of exhausting the inventory they needed to continue their fight.

Lives were on the line. And the best and easiest way to preserve those lives was to get Americans out of their cars to keep them from burning rubber.

There was only one problem: We wouldn’t stop driving.

Voluntary driving restrictions didn’t work. Western states in particular recoiled at any mention of mandatory cutbacks. It took a year of politicking before FDR finally rammed through gas rationing rules.

Faced with a choice between convenience or death, even members of the Greatest Generation were perfectly happy to pick convenience.

Absurd as this recalcitrance was, it pales in comparison to the American unwillingness to break from its status quo on race. Even in the face of crisis.

In 1933, nine years before its rubber shortage, America faced unprecedented economic collapse from the Great Depression. New Deal plans were hatched to center a recovery around home ownership. If the federal government inserted itself into the mortgage business by providing cheap loans, it could expand the housing market, creating jobs and sustainable middle-class wealth in the process.

This was a radical break from established capitalist norms. But crisis dictated action.

There was, however, a hitch: Democrats in the South and other parts of the country preferred economic ruin to the idea of empowering non-white people with the opportunity to become their financial equals.

If Black people and other minority groups were given its benefits, the plan was doomed politically.

The result of this impasse was the Homeowners Loan Corp., a government lending institution that revolutionized home ownership in the United States, but also systematically racialized it.

The lending institution created lending maps that carved up American cities into graded racial territories. Exclusive white residential neighborhoods were given an A grade, and therefore the best loan terms. Black neighborhoods — as well as racially integrated areas — were painted red on the map, given a D grade and denied access to credit entirely.

This was the origin of the term redlining.

For decades, even after the Depression lifted, this system gave white buyers exclusive entree to cheap federal loans. This helped create an unprecedented expansion of home wealth for white America, and a powerful financial disincentive to integration.

America figured out a partial solution to an economic crisis, by expanding its racial one. The byproduct of that decision continued to be so ingrained in our status quo, most hardly knew it was there.

Until COVID.

Amid the sea of selfishness and incompetence that characterized much of the American response to COVID pandemic, the Bay Area was an island of ahistorical reason.

Eight decades after being part of the Western Bloc, which refused to voluntarily give up driving to stave off an invasion, Bay Area cities took early and decisive action to protect citizens from the spread of COVID. When residents were told to comply with strict lockdown and masking ordinances, we did. When vaccines became available, we took them.

These efforts saved lives. And yet they still weren’t enough.

COVID didn’t miss the Bay Area. Instead, its impacts were racialized.

Two months ago, The Chronicle published a map of how San Francisco neighborhoods were hit by COVID. Much of the city escaped relatively unscathed. But students of history will see patterns in the patches of COVID hot spots.

The virus’s trail is so firmly etched into the racial zones of the old Homeowners Loan Corp. maps, it’s as if the disease spread via government-sanctioned segregation in the 1930s.
Which, in many ways, it did.

It would be hard to find a more blatant visual illustration that the past is prologue. That racism and death continue to live embedded in our status quo — even in the face of good intentions.

COVID was a test run. It showed us what our future holds without drastic action.

In the next few months, we’ll almost certainly smell the smoke-scented perfume of the coming climate emergency. As the years pass and that threat worsens, we’ll see history repeat itself. Those who can afford to will flee for safer, more comfortable environs. Or they’ll work from home while the “essential” risk their lives to fulfill the basic needs of their economic superiors. Who lives, who dies, who suffers will be guided at least in part by the racist policies of the past.

The Bay Area’s COVID response showed what a community united can accomplish. But it also revealed the limitations of good intentions absent systemic change.

On Tuesday, California will reopen. COVID restrictions will be lifted. A close approximation of our old lives will be available to us if we chose it.

It is our duty to resist. A return to the status quo is no different than Dan Patrick’s suggestion that Grandma die for the economy.

Police: Vehicle plows into Minnesota protesters, killing 1

Quote:
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A woman was killed and three other people were injured when an SUV struck a parked car and tossed it into demonstrators during a protest in the Minneapolis neighborhood where a Black man was fatally shot earlier this month during an arrest attempt, police and witnesses said Monday.

The suspect was pulled from his vehicle by protesters after the 11:39 p.m. Sunday crash in Uptown and, according to reports from witnesses, demonstrators began striking him, according to police. The driver was taken into custody and was being treated for injuries at a hospital, authorities said.

A witness said the man driving an SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed and appeared to accelerate as he got closer to demonstrators who had blocked off a street. The driver struck a car parked across one of the traffic lanes, and that car then hit people.

“There was one line of barriers and then a second barrier, and he sped up. He sped up. He went even faster as he approached us. You could hear it ... start going even faster as he got close to us,” D.J. Hooker said.

Witnesses said the SUV hit the car hard enough to send it flying.

“The car went through the air and it hit a young woman,” Hooker told Minnesota Public Radio.

Another witness, Brett Williams, said the woman struck by the car that had been hit was thrown into a stop light.

Garrett Knajdek said his sister, Deona M. Knajdek, of Minneapolis, was the protester who was killed, the Star Tribune reported. She was to have celebrated her 32nd birthday on Wednesday, he said.

“She was using her car as a street blockade, and another vehicle struck her vehicle and her vehicle struck her,” said the 29-year-old brother, who learned the details from police and his mother.

He said his sister had 11- and 13-year-old daughters, and was actively involved in issues surrounding justice.

“She constantly (was) sacrificing herself for everyone around her,” he said, “no matter the cost, obviously.”

According to multiple witnesses, Mouat was upset about the teens playing music and was making racial comments about the teens as he walked toward the park with his family.

Another witness assumed Mouat was leaving with his family. Instead, Mouat returned with the bike chain, swung it at the 18-year-old's face, knocked him to the ground and then swung at the witness but missed.

Mouat later admitted that he repeatedly hurle

Of COURSE racism and bigotry are surging dramatically in the U.S. They're being taught, often forcefully, in our schools from pre-kindergarten through graduate school, our military, the corporate world, the internet, impromptu bull sessions everywhere, etc. Its advocates openly and proudly attempt and may yet achieve the demonization and destruction of everything that makes our nation so great and do their damnedest to replace it with pure, mutual interracial hatred.

Who's letting, enabling, and even encouraging this anti-American, self-avowed (by BLM leaders) Marxist critical race theory? YOU ... most of the people in this lousy political forum ... and your peers throughout the slimy underside of the "progressive" cabal.
