Home Depot now the biggest corporate donor to 2020 election objectors, analysis finds

Quote:
Continued focus on the issue
An ever-evolving landscape of companies have been named the top political donor to the 147 election objectors. Six months in, it was the aerospace and defense company General Dynamics (GD). Then, by Jan. 6, 2022, Boeing (BA) became the top donor. Neither company promised to stop the donations, though Boeing encouraged lawmakers “to work with President-elect Biden to unify our nation” on Jan. 7, 2021.

Companies have struggled to find a balance on these donations. In one notable example, Toyota (TM) made headlines for continuing donations to election objectors early on before abruptly announcing last July it was stopping the practice.

Despite reluctance of companies like Toyota to continue donating to those Republicans, OpenSecrets recently found election objectors are among the top fundraisers among Republicans heading into mid-terms.

....Still, it appears that Home Depot's contributions to election objectors jumped in recent years. Accountable.US looked at Home Depot’s giving in February 2018 and February 2020 and found that giving to these 147 lawmakers has jumped compared to the same point in previous election cycles.

Ex-Overstock CEO Admits He FaceTimed Into Shady Voting Machine Op

Quote:
Anew video from former Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne appears to inadvertently bolster the criminal case against one of Byrne’s allies in the Stop The Steal movement.

On March 9, a district attorney announced a laundry list of charges against Mesa County, Colorado clerk Tina Peters and one of her deputies in the clerk’s office. The pair are accused of stealing a local man’s identity and using it to break into county voting machines, which were under the supervision of the clerk’s office. Data from those machines was soon leaked to conspiracy theorists like Ron Watkins and Mike Lindell, who falsely claimed that it showed election malfeasance.

Byrne is an active participant in the Stop The Steal movement, supporting and financing efforts to discredit the results of the 2020 election. He reportedly acted as an unofficial advisor to Donald Trump in Dec. 2020, when he and three other people gave Trump a draft version of an executive order that would have directed the Secretary of Defense to seize voting machines.

In his Wednesday video, Byrne appears to reveal inside information from the Mesa County breach, much of it supporting the charges against Peters. Byrne even claims to have FaceTimed with an unnamed man who was posing as a county worker while examining voting machines.

That alleged impersonator is at the heart of the criminal complaint. Peters and her deputy Belinda Knisley are accused of allowing an unnamed man to pose as “Gerald Wood,” a local resident who briefly held a county access badge. Although the real Gerald Wood was uninvolved with the plot, according to an affidavit, his home was still raided by law enforcement, which seized many of his family’s electronics, according to search warrants in the stolen identity case.

Wood and his family are not commenting on the case, his wife told The Daily Beast.

Byrne’s video, first uploaded to his Locals account and later shared on Twitter by the researcher Trapezoid of Discovery, appears to shed new light on the unnamed impersonator at the center of the leak.

“They gave him some county credentials or something and he dressed up like a little nerd and he went in and he took an image, a forensic image that could be producible in court,” Byrne says in the video.

Neither Peters nor Mesa County’s District Attorney’s office returned requests for comment on the video.

Although the alleged imposter’s name has not been revealed, and the person is not facing charges, members of the Stop The Steal movement have previously suggested that the man was Conan James Hayes, a former professional surfer and current conspiracy theorist who previously tweeted data obtained from voting machines in Antrim County, Michigan.

Metadata from the Mesa County leak shows that a person logged into the voting machines using the initials “cjh.” During a presentation about the Mesa County data at a “cyber symposium” on election fraud last summer, conspiracy theorist Ron Watkins claimed that “Conan James Hayes may have taken, without authorization, the actual hard drives from the Mesa County [Clerk].” Hayes and Watkins had previously discussed election fraud conspiracy theories on Twitter, now-deleted tweets show.

Reached via email, Byrne did not comment on whether Hayes was the unnamed imposter. In his video, however, Byrne claimed to have FaceTimed with the imposter while the man was in the room with the voting machines, and claimed that the man had filmed Colorado election officials “commit[ing] a million felonies right next to me.”

Byrne told The Daily Beast he was not concerned that investigators might contact him over the video and its claims.

“NO CONCERNS WHATSOEVER,” he said via email. “I LOVE IT WHEN INVESTIGATORS CONTACT ME AND I CAN SHARE INFORMATIONN THAT LANDS PEOPLE IN JAIL.” (Byrne clarified that he was not shouting, but typing in capital letters for convenience.)

Byrne said he was still in possession of the man’s videos allegedly showing election malfeasance.

Asked if he could share those videos, Byrne said he might make them available to The Daily Beast if this reporter would call for a review of certain Wisconsin ballots, based on a supposed Wisconsin Supreme Court ruling that rendered them “unlawful.” When informed that the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruling actually upheld those ballots’ legality, and that this reporter has no legal authority over Wisconsin elections, Byrne stopped responding.

After Donald Trump’s supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, a host of major corporations vowed to halt donations to Republicans who objected to certifying Joe Biden as president-elect that night.

Somewhat predictably, the corporate backsliding began within months with groups like Accountable.US tracking the giving ever since. Well, the latest numbers are in.

Home Depot (HD) became the new leader through the end of February thanks to a surge of $140,000 last month alone. The company has now reportedly donated $265,000 in total to these lawmakers, dubbed the "Sedition Caucus" by political opponents. All told, 48 of the 147 lawmakers in this group have received money from the company’s PAC.

“No corporation can truly claim to be on the side of democracy while they throw money at the election objectors in Congress who tried to finish what violent insurrectionists started,” Accountable.US president Kyle Herrig said in a statement after the latest numbers came out.

Kevin McCarthy's $104 million raised eclipses previous House GOP leaders

Quote:
McCarthy, the House minority leader, is slated to be elected speaker by GOP colleagues if Republicans win the majority in November. On Tuesday, he announced raising $31.5 million in the first quarter of this year, bringing his total haul for the 2022 cycle to $104 million. That figure surpasses the amount raised not just by previous Republicans to lead the House minority, but previous GOP speakers, including the two most recent: John Boehner and Paul Ryan.

“I want to thank our supporters for their generosity and faith in our mission to win back the House majority,” McCarthy said in a statement. “Their contributions will help ensure our candidates have the resources necessary to compete and win this November.”

By Tom Boggioni

According to a report from the Daily Beast's Roger Sollenberger, former president Donald Trump could be looking at a massive fine from the Federal Election Commission over the handling of $800 million in campaign donations.

Quote:

At issue is how Trump's 2020 re-election campaign shuffled money around in his losing bid to remain in the Oval Office.

As Sollenberger wrote, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign was on the receiving end of a $113,000 fine from the FEC last week for its involvement in research for the so-called Steele file with the federal government claiming the campaign hid the payments.

Coming on the heels of that, Sollenberger reports watchdog group Campaign Legal Center previously filed a complaint with the FEC alleging Trump's people " violated federal campaign finance transparency requirements by routing hundreds of millions of dollars in campaign spending through intermediaries without disclosing the ultimate payees," and now a former FEC official has asked a judge to force them to investigate it.

According to the Beast report, the FEC -- "specifically its three Republican commissioners" -- has turned a blind eye to accusations against the Trump campaign but now, with the recent Clinton fine as a reminder, that may change.

"Dan Weiner, a former counsel at the FEC who now directs the Brennan Center’s Elections and Government Program, said the Republican commissioners will have to contend with this precedent.," Sollenberger wrote, with Weiner explaining, "The FEC isn’t exactly overzealous about enforcement, but you’ve got to have some modicum of accuracy. You can’t describe something as ‘legal services’ when it’s nothing like legal services.”

Calling the Clinton fine "an interesting precedent," he added, “Historically both sides have placed some emphasis on consistency, and it will put some constraint on the commissioners to reconcile any refusal to go forwards in the Trump case.”

After noting, "While it’s inescapable that the three Republican commissioners are far more averse to action than the Democrats, there’s debate over whether the rift is political or purely ideological. The conservatives may not specifically be in the bag for their own party, some observers argue—just less inclined to enforcement generally," the Beast report added, "The filing alleges that the Trump campaign laundered about $770 million in expenses to an unknown number of vendors through a single shell company. According to news reports, that company—American Made Media Consultants—was designed by members of Trump’s inner circle (with Trump’s blessing) specifically to conceal campaign payees from the public.'Like the Clinton complaint, CLC said the Trump arrangement “has hidden the identities of other sub-vendors' and the details of payments to those sub-vendors."

"CLC filed that initial complaint more than 600 days ago, but, according to Adav Noti, a former FEC attorney and current vice president at CLC, there has been “no indication” that the FEC has taken any action. So purely by coincidence, the same day that the Clinton news leaked to the press, Noti filed a lawsuit asking a federal judge to order the FEC to move," Sollenberger reported, adding that Noti told him, "The law requires campaigns to disclose where they spend money and what they spend it on, because voters deserve to know where their money goes. But there’s a growing problem in federal political campaigns of running spending through shell corporations to hide where it’s going. We’ve seen it now in multiple election cycles, and campaigns for all federal offices.”

Mike Lindell says he donated up to $800,000 to indicted Colorado official

Quote:
Mike Lindell announced he donated up to $800,000 to the legal defense of Tina Peters, an embattled Mesa County clerk facing ethics woes and an indictment last month for alleged election equipment tampering and misconduct in Colorado.

The MyPillow CEO and significant booster of 2020 election fraud claims admitted to the donation during an "Election Truth Rally” at the Colorado Capitol alongside Peters on Tuesday, per the Colorado Sun.

COLORADO COUNTY CLERK TINA PETERS INDICTED IN ELECTION SECURITY BREACH INVESTIGATION

“I probably put in three, four or five, maybe $800,000, of my own money,” Lindell told reporters.

Peters, a Republican running to be secretary of state, has denied wrongdoing as she is being investigated by the Colorado Independent Ethics Commission in response to a complaint about the lack of transparency of her fund. Donations to political candidates in the state above the ethics guidelines are supposed to be reported to the state. Penalties for violations can vary depending on the situation.

Peters is also facing an indictment for allegedly asking security to turn off the security cameras in the elections office and allowing a consultant to make an unauthorized copy of the vote-counting equipment hard drive last year. Passwords and material about Dominion Voting Systems machines leaked shortly thereafter, and authorities traced the leak back to Mesa County. Peters was indicted on 10 counts of misdemeanor and felony charges. The indictment is separate from the ethics inquiries into Peters.

In addition, Peters is currently being investigated by the ethics commission over whether she improperly accepting flights and hotel stays from Lindell, which could count as a gift that exceeds state limits, for when she attended his cyber symposium in South Dakota about the election last August. At the event Tuesday, Lindell said Peters "probably" traveled on his private jet.

“She came to the cyber symposium with the group from Colorado,” Lindell told reporters. “I picked people up — I invited all 50 states, all 50 states were represented.”

After the rally concluded, a man named Eric Coomer approached Lindell with a manila envelope, serving him a lawsuit for defamation, according to 9News reporter Marshall Zelinger.

During the rally, Lindell and Peters peddled claims that the 2020 election was stolen from former President Donald Trump. Such claims have been roundly rejected by the courts and election officials around the country.

Petitions to recall Democrat Gov. Jared Polis circulated during the event, which featured appearances from state Republicans including Reps. Dave Williams, Mark Baisely, Ron Hanks, and Richard Holtorf, per the Colorado Sun.

“Have you heard them talk about the Big Lie," Peters asked the crowd, according to Vice News reporter Elizabeth Landers. “They tried to find something … that’s why they raided my home.

Pennsylvania voters won't choose their Senate nominees for more than a month but already almost $80 million has been spent on television by candidates and their aligned super PACs in the race.

That total makes Pennsylvania the most expensive Senate race in the country, leading Arizona ($64 million) and Georgia ($62 million) in total ad spending to date. (Shout out to CNN's David Wright for compiling these numbers.)

The spending in the Pennsylvania open seat -- Republican Sen. Pat Toomey is retiring -- is being driven by the nasty fight in the GOP primary between television doctor Mehmet Oz and hedge fund manager David McCormick.

Oz has already spent $11.5 million on ads in the race while McCormick trails not far behind at $10.1 million. (Both candidates are spending heavily from their own personal wealth.) A super PAC affiliated with McCormick -- Honor Pennsylvania -- has dumped $10.4 million on ads, the vast majority of which attack Oz.

Of course, Oz got something more valuable than money over the weekend when former President Donald Trump endorsed his candidacy.

Updated Report: Oil Giants Post Eye-Popping $237 Billion Record Profits

Quote:
March 24, 2022 at 9:33 AM WASHINGTON DC – Today, Accountable.US issued a correction noting that twenty-five top oil and gas companies saw a staggering $237 billion in record profits in 2021 and not the $205 billion the government watchdog previously reported on March 15.

“It turns out twenty-five top oil and gas companies saw an eye-popping $237 billion in record profits last year and not the $205 billion we reported early this month,” said Kyle Herrig, president of Accountable.US. “We regret the error, but more than anything we hope Big Oil regrets its decision to shower these massive earnings on their wealthy executives and shareholders rather than helping American consumers struggling to fill their gas tanks and heat their homes.”

The original $205 billion figure only included three out of the four quarters for Saudi Aramco. Their earnings report was released later than others so the new $237 billion figure reflects the total with their final quarter now included.

Donations Steered to Trump Super PAC by Canadian Are Found to Be Illegal

Quote:
WASHINGTON — A Canadian steel industry billionaire illegally helped steer $1.75 million in donations to a pro-Trump super PAC and has agreed to pay one of the largest fines ever levied by the Federal Election Commission to settle the case, the commission said on Friday.

The $975,000 fine will be paid by entities controlled by Barry Zekelman, a steel industry executive from Ontario who had lobbied the Trump administration to use its power to tighten import restrictions on Mr. Zekelman’s competitors from around the world.

The action came as the election commission continues a multiyear crackdown on foreign influence in American politics.

Mr. Zekelman’s donations in 2018 to the America First Action super PAC helped him secure an invitation to a private dinner with President Donald J. Trump at the Trump International Hotel in Washington, where Mr. Zekelman personally pushed Mr. Trump about the steel tariffs and other matters.

The $1.75 million in donations came from a Pennsylvania-based subsidiary of Mr. Zekelman’s company named Wheatland Tube.

But The New York Times first reported in 2019 that Mr. Zekelman played a role in directing one of his executives who is a U.S. citizen to send in the contributions — some of the largest made by any donor to the super PAC — even though federal law prohibits foreigners from participating in decision making related to campaign donations, as well as from directly writing campaign checks.

The $975,000 fine is the third largest in the history of the Federal Election Commission, and the largest ever imposed in a case associated with an illegal foreign contribution.

“It is a strong message to anybody out there who is confused about this,” said Ellen L. Weintraub, a member of the commission, which voted to confirm the settlement. “You cannot have foreign nationals involved in any way in political contributions in this country.”

Mr. Zekelman, in a settlement deal that his lawyer signed in late March but that was finalized on Friday, also agreed to ask America First Action, which helped support Mr. Trump’s 2020 election efforts, to return the donated money, or to redirect it to the U.S. Treasury.
