Tyson Poor, Bryan Metcalp-Perez and I are planning to fly to Cuba mid April with windsurfing gear for a film project.
Anybody know where to find the best wind and maybe some other windsurfers?
Gracias.

Until last year, trade between the USA and Cuba was shutdown since the Cuban embargo of 1960. That's why you'll see so many classic 1950s American cars there and nothing newer, (except Russian cars).
Most Cubans probably never heard of windsurfing. It's a wide open market for you guys! |

Wyatt- Not sure about any true windsurfing hot spots, but Varadero Beach should be on your list to check out. Sort of a Cancun of Cuba, sensational beach, and there is always some sea breeze there (sometimes stronger).
Not sure if you will spot other windsurfers on the water, but there are said to be windsurf rentals at hotels such as Blau Varadero.
Several Cubans have defected to Florida by windsurfing -- including Raydel Armas, who's colorful presence graced us here on these forums for a few years, until he enlisted in the US Army -- and Varadero is generally the beach of choice to launch from, to brave the journey across the Florida Straits.
Varadero current wind & forecast:

I think I remember a Cuba story from Phil Soltysiak. He might have some tips for you guys. Can't wait to see what you come up with! _________________ formerly known as hodad.andy

All anyone has to do is Google "Windsurfing in Cuba" and there is a lot of stuff there, lots, pics and everything! |

I wonder of those websites actually help anyone new the to area.
My experience is with Puerto Rico. The websites are useless, most gone out of business or switching to other sports or just plain mid 90's information.
I guess any information is better than none at all.
Spring is the best time to windsurf the Caribbean. Winds on the N shores, and also wind on the S shores, but tamer. Almost a can't miss proposition if you can stay for at least 3 weeks. |
