Fox News lies debunked: Viewers know less than if they watched no news at all

Quote:
President Biden recently revived a debate over Fox News by comparing it to other legitimate news outlets. In this special report, Ari Melber shows the “equivalence” push by some politicians is dangerous by delving into research showing Fox often misleads and misinforms its viewers on critical issues, like the pandemic, climate change, the 2020 election and the Jan. 6 insurrection.

Playing Murdoch: 'Succession' star on money, power and politics

Quote:
Actor and author Brian Cox, known for his role in HBO's hit show “Succession,” joins MSNBC's Ari Melber to discuss how the rising level of inequality affects American democracy and why the show "Succession," which depicts an aging billionaire who owns a powerful right-wing cable channel and whose children jockey to take over the company, resonates with such a broad audience. Cox also opens up about what motivates his character "Logan Roy," his desire to pursue acting, and his new memoir, "Putting the Rabbit in the Hat."

Fox News Silent After Guest Dies Of Covid

Quote:
Chris Hayes: For ratings, for fame, for cynical, monetary purposes, that network—overseen by CEO Suzanne Scott—has decided to fan the flames of vaccine resistance. And it's getting thousands of people killed. And when those people die, they are of course forgotten by Fox News.

Former Fox News Producer for Sean Hannity Indicted for Helping Russia

Quote:
As the United States increasingly goes after some of the Kremlin’s business tentacles, the latest person arrested for violating U.S. sanctions against Russia is less notable for his ties to Vladimir Putin than his old ties to Sean Hannity—he is a former Fox News producer who left to launch a Russian propaganda network.

The Department of Justice on Thursday revealed that Jack Hanick was quietly arrested in London on Feb. 3 for dodging U.S. sanctions by helping a sanctioned Russian oligarch, Konstantin Malofeyev, start his right-wing Tsargrad TV.

The DOJ simultaneously unsealed a grand jury indictment against him, accusing Hanick of knowingly engaging in business dealings with Malofeyev, who had been formally sanctioned by the U.S. government for his role in financing Russia-backed soldiers in eastern Ukraine who have violently tried to break off from the democratic country since 2014.

The indictment also accuses Hanick of lying to FBI agents about his travels to Greece and Bulgaria to expand the TV network in 2015 and 2016, when he was interviewed by American investigators last year in New York City.

Federal agents assert that many of the damning details about Hanick’s Kremlin adventures were laid out in an unpublished memoir he kept in his email account, which was searched by the feds with a court-approved search warrant.

Malofeyev was sanctioned in December 2014 by the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control for financing separatists in the Donbas region in southeastern Ukraine.

Russia-aligned fighters there operated with the not-so-secret help of that country's military and used that government’s weapons when they shot down Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, killing 283 passengers and 15 crewmembers.

Malofeyev (also spelled in the West as Malofeev) started an Orthodox Christian network called Tsargrad TV. In 2020, he launched a similarly named right-wing political group in Russia with an imperialist bent that would—much like the National Rifle Association does in the United States—pressure politicians to toe the conservative line.

According to The Warsaw Institute, a Polish-based geopolitical think tank, “Tsargrad” would test political candidates’ adherence to “traditional family, religious, and cultural values of the Russian people.”

The Financial Times in 2015 analyzed how Malofeyev launched his “conservative yet modern spin on global news” in an attempt to mimic the rise of Fox News. Then, in 2018, the online news site Salon called out Hanick for joining the Russian operation, noting that he had previously served as Hannity’s director at Fox News.

Hanick got his start at Fox News when it first launched in 1996. Fifteen years later, in 2011, he left. Three years later, he joined forces with Malofeyev’s Russian propaganda operation. The Justice Department now wants to extradite him from the United Kingdom to New York City.

Damian Williams, the top federal prosecutor in Manhattan, issued a statement noting that sanctions “prohibit United States citizens from working for or doing business with Malofeyev but as alleged, Hanick violated those sanctions by working directly for Malofeyev on multiple television projects over the course of several years.”

Williams noted the indictment underscores his office’s “commitment to the enforcement of laws intended to hamstring those who would use their wealth to undermine fundamental democratic processes. This Office will continue to be a leader in the Justice Department’s work to hold accountable actors who would support flagrant and unjustified acts of war.”

Quote:

U.S. officials are calling out Russia for renewing false allegations the U.S. is funding bio-weapons labs in Ukraine. Despite this, Fox News host Tucker Carlson has been amplifying Russia’s claims. MSNBC’s Ari Melber is joined by Michael McFaul, the former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, to discuss.

Sad, forgotten legacy of Limbaugh shows the future to current peddlers of hate

Quote:

I was reading an acclaimed list of progressive and liberal thinkers; and was struck by how many times I’ve come across their quotes in my feed. There were people like Paul Krugman, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Jon Stewart. I looked out other lists, and came across others I know and admire. (Kos was in the top 10 in this Forbes list for building this site, which is more relevant than ever decades later.)

Going through the liberals, all are still talked about and highly regarded. For curiosity's sake, I looked up a list of conservative thinkers. I got people like George Will, William Buckley Jr., and Ayn Rand. I had to agree they made a lasting impact. I then moved on to other avenues of interest. Yet later that day I came across a tweet commemorating the one-year anniversary of Rush Limbaugh’s death.

Fox Business guest calls out Devin Nunes' cow-eyed lies about Trump's failing Truth Social platform
Rush Limbaugh left nothing behind. No one quotes him, no one references him, his vast fortune didn't go to support any of the causes he supposedly believed in. The various Fox News talking heads should remember this. They will leave nothing when they are gone.

Wow, that hit me.

I thought, wait a minute, Rush Limbaugh was highly paid and tremendously overhyped while he was still alive. I suddenly noticed that none of my right-wing friends were quoting him—and actually rarely did even when he was alive. Limbaugh never said anything profound or meaningful—just racist. In fact, it was liberals who quoted him to showcase the true beliefs of the conservative movement. Most of his quotes were things like his “jokes” about Aids victims, degrading comments about women’s appearances, calling a student who disagreed with him a “slut” to his audience, or telling a black man to “take the bone out of his nose.” In the end, Rush was just another disgusting bigot.

If you google his name, you will notice that all of the stories about him stop right immediately after his death. He was lionized for about a week, and then the world moved on. Rush grifted and led a decadent life of luxury, yet his legacy is simply one of hate-mongering against the most vulnerable populations among us. He left absolutely nothing for his supposed followers to latch on to. The fact is, Rush wasn’t needed even amongst them, because there were always plenty of white nationalist pundits and right-wing propagandists they could go to, and they did.

After all, these pundits just say the same things: they repeat the same talking points and make fun of others not like them. That’s easy to do and they are all replaceable. The sad reality for them is that they too will all be forgotten as well.

iAjOThJIeTJ-UwDVxOVj9B0TiRRY_UcxnAu9KaUlYjQ.png
Stephen Colbert’s quotes from over a decade ago still show up in my feeds. His bits were so good, such as running for president exposing the the hypocrisy of Super PACs, that he actually won a Peabody Award. Jon Stewart was still discussed years after he left, and still advocated for causes on Capitol Hill after shunning the public spotlight.

Rachel Maddow set the bar very high for standards of integrity on her show—Republicans could never attack her over something she said that was wrong. Compare that record with someone with Tucker Carlson.

Speaking of the new Rush Limbaughs: what do you think will become of people like Tucker Carlson, Dan Bongino, or Jeannine Pirro? What exactly do they even stand for? What causes do they support? I mean, besides themselves?

These people have accomplished nothing, and will suffer the same fate as Bill O’Reilly. I noticed he isn’t on any list of conservative thinkers. He’s just remembered as another pervert who got fired from Fox News.

NEW YORK, NY - MARCH 13: Traffic on Sixth Avenue passes by advertisements featuring Fox News personalities, including Bret Baier, Martha MacCallum, Tucker Carlson, Laura Ingraham, and Sean Hannity, adorn the front of the News Corporation building, March 13, 2019 in New York City. On Wednesday the network's sales executives are hosting an event for advertisers to promote Fox News. Fox News personalities Tucker Carlson and Jeanine Pirro have come under criticism in recent weeks for controversial comments and multiple advertisers have pulled away from their shows. (Photo by Drew Angerer/Getty Images)
None of them will be remembered
This site will long outlast Markos when he leaves the earth. (Funny, I doubt anyone still gets the “Limbaugh Letter.”) Yet Rush contributed nothing and left nothing. He didn’t advocate to make his listeners lives any better, but he did convince them to vote against things they desperately needed, like universal healthcare, unions, and pensions.

If anything, he failed the basic test of a successful life: he didn’t leave the world better than when he left it. In fact, he did his level-best to make it worse. What he did “accomplish” was to help turn the GOP into a cult of Trump. He never pontificated on higher platitudes on what the conservative movement could be; instead, he provided excuses for poor behavior from the worst people in the party. He justified hateful and harmful policies by pointing out how much it would hurt the people he wanted his followers to hate.

The few times I suffered through his show, the one dominant variable was his massive ego. Rush Limbaugh always bragged that he had talent “on loan from God” and did his show with “half my brain tied behind my back.” He was super proud of his following, and believed himself to be super important.

He was so delusional that he even compared himself to Martin Luther King, Jr. Ironic, since MLK was a liberal titan—a social justice activist whose quotes are etched forever in stone in Washington D.C. next to his monument. At the end of Rush’s life, just one year later, Rush Limbaugh has… what? a website? Not only is he never quoted, he is never even mentioned. He has been erased. Forgotten.

A fitting end to a sorry legacy for a sad, pathetic, bigoted man.

‘Yes Sir’: Sean Hannity Took Direct Orders From Mark Meadows on Election Coverage

Quote:
We all knew Sean Hannity was doing the bidding of the Trump administration. We found out Monday he was doing it literally.

CNN on Monday published a slew of text messages between Trump Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and prominent Republican lawmakers and conservative figures — including Hannity. The Jan. 6 committee has already released several texts exchanged between Meadows and Hannity, but the ones released Monday are particularly striking, demonstrating just how firmly the White House had Hannity secured under its thumb.

“Hey. NC gonna be ok?” Hannity wrote Meadows last Nov. 3, asking whether Meadows’ home state of North Carolina was going to go to Trump.

“Stress every vote matters,” Meadows replied. “Get out and vote. On radio.”

“Yes sir,” Hannity wrote. “On it. Any place in particular we need a push”

Meadows pointed to Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Nevada, in addition to North Carolina. “Got it,” Hannity responded. “Everywhere.”

This trove of text messages, which also includes Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) pushing for Trump to institute martial law and noting that Trump supporters had “no other choice” but to attack the Capitol on Jan. 6, is only the latest in a series of revelations to come out of the thousands of messages Meadows provided to the Jan. 6 committee. It’s been reported in recent weeks that Meadows received texts from GOP lawmakers, Donald Trump Jr., and Ginni Thomas, wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, urging him to help overturn the election.

Hannity was one of several Fox News hosts who wrote to Meadows on Jan. 6 urging him to get Trump to call off his supporters. He also texted Meadows on Jan. 19, sharing a link to Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) saying in a speech on the Senate floor that the deadly riot was “provoked by the President and other powerful people.”

“Well this is as bad as this can get,” Hannity wrote.

Twitter user @acyn responded to CNN’s report by pointing out that Hannity has in the past claimed he is “not told what to say” and that “we have always been independent and follow our on path on this show.”

We now have pretty hard evidence that Hannity’s highly rated show was basically state-run television while the former president was in office.

https://news.yahoo.com/fox-employee-said-executives-network-140556031.html

A Fox employee said executives at the network said they wanted to purposely air 'grievance' to 'get people boiled up': NYTExecutives at Fox News indicated to employees that they wanted to push a narrative that focused on "grievance," according to a report published Saturday by The New York Times.

Quote:

One current Fox employee said the network execs had a goal to highlight "the grievance, the stuff that would get people boiled up."

The driving narrative, the employee suggested, was one that made viewers believe they're in danger. "They're coming for you, the Blacks are coming for you, the Mexicans are coming for you," the employee told The Times.

Media Matters, a nonprofit media watchdog, has published reports accusing Fox News of fearmongering across a variety of issues, from terrorism at the southern border to critical race theory to the coronavirus pandemic.

Polls have previously indicated that people who watch Fox News are likelier to believe former President Donald Trump's unsubstantiated claim that the 2020 presidential election was stolen. They're also more likely to believe in vaccine misinformation.

The influence Fox News, as the most-watched cable news channel in the US, has is felt widely, even in federal office. President Joe Biden has in private referred to Fox News owner Rupert Murdoch as "the most dangerous man in the world" and "one of the most destructive forces in the United States."

According to The Times report, the network leverages viewer data to make decisions about its coverage.

As Insider's Kelsey Vlamis reported, Fox News host Tucker Carlson relies on comprehensive "minute-by-minute" data that informs the network how viewers respond to different coverage.

"He is going to double down on the white nationalism because the minute-by-minutes show that the audience eats it up," one former Fox employee who worked with Carlson told The Times.

Fox reporters who covered Trump unfavorably consistently received low ratings, The Times reported. As did left-leaning guests.

"They're all obsessed with the minute-by-minutes," another former Fox employee told The Times. "Every second that goes on that network now gets scrutinized."

When reached for comment, a Fox News Media spokesperson referred Insider to the following statement published in The Times:

"FOX News Media has grown through strategic innovation, redirecting investments in journalism to encompass more than 50 percent of the budget while expanding our footprint beyond one legacy linear network to eight thriving platforms. As a result, we've doubled our audience, achieved unrivaled results, and have become the destination that more Democrats and Independents choose for their news coverage while our competitors have lost dramatic levels of viewership. We couldn't be prouder of our entire team, whose commitment to excellence in journalism and opinion has led FOX News Media to all-time ratings records and delivered the best in class to our viewers."

Fox News and Tucker Carlson use 'minute-by-minute' ratings that show their audience loves 'white nationalism' talking points, report says

Quote:
Fox News and host Tucker Carlson look closely at minute-by-minute ratings that show there's an appetite among its audience for talking points embraced by white nationalists, according to a report published Saturday by The New York Times.

The Times published a three-part series called "American Nationalist" that's all about Carlson, cable TV's highest-rated primetime pundit.

Three former Fox employees told the Times Carlson specifically relied on "minute-by-minute" ratings data. Such data is more expensive than "quarter-hour" ratings used by other cable newsrooms, but it provides feedback down to the minute on what leads viewers to change the channel or stick around.

Carlson's stories about immigration or warnings of demographic change in the US, like the white nationalist "Great Replacement" theory, were a hit, the outlet reported.

"He is going to double down on the white nationalism because the minute-by-minutes show that the audience eats it up," another former Fox employee who worked with Carlson told the Times.

Fox in general increasingly focused on minute-by-minutes ratings, which showed segments that featured Fox reporters or stories considered unfavorable to Trump were not interesting to viewers, the outlet reported.

"They're all obsessed with the minute-by-minutes," another former Fox employee told the Times. "Every second that goes on that network now gets scrutinized."

In a statement shared with Insider, Justin Wells, a senior executive producer for Carlson's show, said: "Tucker Carlson programming embraces diversity of thought and presents various points of view in an industry where contrarian thought and the search for truth are often ignored."

A Fox spokesperson also said: "We couldn't be prouder of our entire team, whose commitment to excellence in journalism and opinion has led FOX News Media to all-time ratings records and delivered the best in class to our viewers."

As The New York Times noted, the writer of the series on Carlson, Nicholas Confessore, is a contributor at Fox competitor MSNBC.
