Graham says he will call Mueller to testify before Senate panel about Russia probe

Quote:
"Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee have previously requested Mr. Mueller appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee to testify about his investigation," Graham said in a statement.

"That request will be granted," he added.

The statement from Graham, which was also posted to Twitter, comes after Mueller published a Washington Post op-ed defending his team's findings on President Trump's associate Roger Stone after Trump moved to commute Stone's sentence.

Stone "remains a convicted felon, and rightly so," Mueller wrote.

He added that he felt compelled to "respond both to broad claims that our investigation was illegitimate and our motives were improper, and to specific claims that Roger Stone was a victim of our office. Stone was prosecuted and convicted because he committed federal crimes."

Graham referenced the Washington Post op-ed, saying that Mueller is "apparently ... willing-and also capable-of defending" the investigation.

Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, strongly criticized President Donald Trump's commutation for longtime friend and former campaign aide Roger Stone, calling it "unprecedented, historic corruption."

"Unprecedented, historic corruption: an American president commutes the sentence of a person convicted by a jury of lying to shield that very president," Romney wrote on Twitter Saturday morning.

here is why it is not a pardon... it is an ongoing crime.

https://www.justsecurity.org/71269/pardoning-roger-stone-could-itself-be-an-unpardonable-crime/

Pardoning Roger Stone Could Itself Be an Unpardonable Crime

Quote:
Similarly, in United States v. Wilson, the Court noted that a pardon ”exempts the individual … from the punishment the law inflicts for a crime he has committed.”

This limitation takes on particular significance when a pardon is part of a broader conspiracy, for example to obstruct justice. Conspiracies are ongoing crimes; as the Court has noted, once a defendant has joined a conspiracy he or she “continues to violate the law ‘through every moment of [the conspiracy’s] existence.’”

So if a conspiracy exists to obstruct an investigation, and part of that obstruction involves pardoning someone who hid evidence or lied to investigators, then the pardon itself is a continuation of the conspiracy. That means that when the pardon is issued, there is an ongoing crime that both the president and the recipient of the pardon are committing at that time.

Since pardons can only apply to already-completed crimes, a pardon that furthers a conspiracy to obstruct justice would be invalid with respect to that conspiracy, as would any subsequent pardons that further the same conspiracy. Both the individual issuing the pardon and the one receiving it would remain fully liable for the conspiracy to obstruct justice.

Just terrorist, murderers, drug dealers, and traitors...

Stone was the victim of a bogus investigation based on lies and absolutely should have been commuted... Now he can fight to have his conviction overturned because of the blatant hate and bias against him by the judge and jury....

There has never been a stronger case for a president to use his right to commute a sentence...

What is the basis for that blabber? Sounds like a McEnany/Fux news soundbite!

mat-ty, you seem to have such a simple mind. Obama bad, Trump good.

It never really varies. It's a very weak and pathetic outlook, especially with all we know by now.

Justice Department internal watchdog is investigating Roger Stone's sentencing, say sources
Prosecutor Aaron Zelinsky told Congress that the U.S. attorney's office in D.C. told him to recommend a lighter sentence because of Stone's ties to Trump.

Quote:
WASHINGTON — The Justice Department inspector general's office has begun investigating the circumstances surrounding the sentencing recommendation for Roger Stone, a longtime friend of President Donald Trump's, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

The investigation is focused on events in February, according to the two sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Stone's prosecutors have said that is when they were told to seek a lighter sentence than they had previously considered.

Attorney General William Barr ultimately intervened to override the prosecutors' recommendation of seven to nine years and to ask for a lighter sentence. All four prosecutors quit the case as a result.

Roger Stone calls for Trump to declare 'martial law' if he loses the election — and order arrests of Mark Zuckerberg, Tim Cook, and the Clintons

Quote:
Roger Stone, the self-described political "dirty trickster" who advised Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, has urged the president to seize power should he lose November's election.

In an interview with Alex Jones' far-right conspiracy-theory site, Infowars, Stone echoed groundless claims pushed by Trump that the Democratic Party would rig the election.

Stone encouraged Trump to consider declaring "martial law" should he lose reelection, or invoke the Insurrection Act. Using those new powers, Stone suggested, he should order the arrest of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Apple CEO Tim Cook, "the Clintons," and "anybody else who can be proven to be involved in illegal activity."

The comments were made by Stone last week and first reported over the weekend by the progressive group MediaMatters.
