Congress appears to be the target of a 'concerted foreign interference campaign,' top Dems say

Quote:
WASHINGTON – Top congressional Democrats on Monday demanded an intelligence briefing for all lawmakers on foreign interference in the 2020 presidential election –suggesting the Trump administration has specific information about a "concerted" disinformation campaign in the works.

"We are gravely concerned, in particular, that Congress appears to be the target of a concerted foreign interference campaign, which seeks to launder and amplify disinformation in order to influence congressional activity, public debate, and the presidential election in November," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., wrote in a letter FBI Director Christopher Wray.

"Given the seriousness and specificity of these threats, as members of congressional leadership and the congressional intelligence committees we believe it is imperative that the FBI provide a classified defensive briefing to all members of Congress," the letter states.

The missive asks the FBI to hold the briefing "at the earliest possible opportunity." It was also signed by three other Democrats: Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, and Senate intelligence committee Vice-Chairman Mark Warner.

A congressional official familiar with the matter declined to explain what prompted the urgent request for a briefing but said it is based on the Trump administration’s own intelligence reporting and analysis. The official, who was not authorized to speak on the record about the matter, said it was vital that intelligence officials brief lawmakers before they leave for a month-long August break.

An FBI spokeswoman said the agency had received the letter but declined to comment further.

Intelligence officials told lawmakers in February that Russia was already interfering in the 2020 campaign to try to get President Donald Trump re-elected, according to media reports at the time. In the 2016 election, the Kremlin hacked into Democratic Party emails and orchestrated a sophisticated disinformation campaign designed to help elect then-candidate Trump, intelligence officials concluded in a January 2017 report.

Trump has repeatedly discounted Russia's role in the 2016 election, and he has downplayed the potential for Moscow's potential interference in 2020.

Ex-FBI agent Strzok due out with book about Trump, Russia

Quote:
“Russia has long regarded the United States as its ‘Main Enemy,’ and I spent decades trying to protect our country from their efforts to weaken and undermine us," Strzok said Tuesday in a statement accompanying the book announcement.

“In this book," he added, “I use that background to explain how the elevation by President Trump and his collaborators of Trump’s own personal interests over the interests of the country allowed Putin to succeed beyond Stalin’s wildest dreams, and how the national security implications of Putin’s triumph will persist through our next election and beyond.”

As a senior counterintelligence agent with more than 20 years at the FBI, Strzok helped lead the investigation into whether Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton mishandled classified information on the private email server she relied on as secretary of state. The FBI ultimately recommended against criminal charges.

He also played a pivotal role in the Russia investigation, including by interviewing former national security adviser Michael Flynn about his contacts with the Russian ambassador during the presidential transition period.

Strzok briefly served on special counsel Robert Mueller's team but was removed from his role after the Justice Department inspector general flagged derogatory and pejorative text messages about Trump that Strzok sent and received during the 2016 campaign.

Once the texts were made public, Strzok became a regular Twitter target of the Republican president's attacks, with Trump alleging that Strzok and others in the FBI had plotted against his campaign and had even committed treason — an accusation that Strzok's lawyer rejected as “beyond reckless." The text messages were exchanged with an FBI lawyer, Lisa Page, and Trump routinely refers to the two of them together as “the lovers.”

At a fiery, daylong congressional hearing in July 2018, Strzok insisted that he never allowed personal viewpoints to influence his work, though he did acknowledge being dismayed by Trump's behavior during the campaign..

At a House Intelligence Committee meeting last week, Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.) pressed Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) on whether the Republican had received anti-Biden information from a Kremlin-linked Ukrainian source. According to a transcript from the closed-door discussion, Nunes didn't want to answer.

Maloney responded soon after that Nunes's refusal "speaks volumes."

On the other side of Capitol Hill, Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) has faced allegations that his anti-Biden efforts have been exploited by foreign operatives who've launched a foreign influence operation targeting the United States. Yesterday, the ABC affiliate in Milwaukee asked the GOP senator about possibly having relied on information from pro-Kremlin Ukrainians.

Johnson replied that he and his panel "are getting information from a variety of sources."

And then, of course, there's the Trump campaign.

Jason Miller, a senior adviser on President Donald Trump's reelection campaign, repeatedly dodged a question about whether the campaign is receiving or will accept foreign assistance. He called it a "silly question," despite ongoing concerns of foreign interference ahead of the November election.

Three times yesterday, Fox News' Chris Wallace asked Miller whether the president's political operation can flatly state that it will not accept foreign assistance. It would've been easy to say yes. Instead, Miller dismissed it as a "silly" question.

It was, incidentally, last June when Donald Trump told a national television audience that he'd welcome foreign intervention in his re-election campaign. A month later, the American president launched an illegal extortion scheme, trying to force his Ukrainian counterpart to help Trump cheat in the 2020 cycle.

The resulting mosaic isn't pretty: House Republicans, Senate Republicans, and Team Trump, over the course of the same week, each faced questions about relying on political assistance from foreign sources, and each of them dodged.

It also comes on the heels of GOP senators repeatedly derailing legislation that would require campaigns to report attempts at foreign elections interference to the FBI.

Lest anyone think this is a bipartisan issue, Joe Biden's campaign told the Associated Press that the Democratic operation is "absolutely not" accepting foreign political assistance.

Meanwhile, House members received a briefing last week from William Evanina, director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center, and according to a Politico report, Evanina "acknowledged that Russia is again trying to boost President Donald Trump's reelection and denigrate his opponent."

Democratic leaders argued that the public ought to be made aware of this.

lets see if all the media covers this one...

https://news.yahoo.com/atifa-website-one-america-chanel-rion-russia-004727528.html

'Antifa' website cited in conservative media attack on Biden is linked to — wait for it — Russia

Quote:
WASHINGTON — At his press briefing Wednesday, President Trump, as he usually does, called for a question from Chanel Rion, the chief White House correspondent for the conservative One America News network, which has at times replaced Fox News as the president’s favorite news outlet. Rion’s question had nothing to do with COVID-19 or the economic recovery Trump had been boasting about, but instead brought up an obscure website, antifa.com.

“I wanted to highlight a kind of odd situation. In the last hour or so, if you googled ‘antifa.com,’ it would take you straight to Joe Biden’s website — his official campaign website — odd situation,” Rion said, adding, “We don’t know who’s behind that.”

Rion went on to suggest the site posed “an interesting leadership question” for the former vice president and his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif.

“Should Joe Biden, the Democrat Party, Kamala Harris, should they publicly denounce the antifa as a domestic terrorist organization?” Rion asked the president.

It’s not clear why she thought it raised that question, though, since there is no evidence that the Biden campaign had anything to do with antifa.com, or vice versa. Instead, the phenomenon cited by Rion had a clear link to Russia.

The people in control of any website can redirect to another, without the permission or even knowledge of the second site. Nothing Rion described would indicate direct involvement by Biden’s campaign, which did not respond to a request for comment on this story.

Records for “antifa.com” in the domain name database Whoisology.com show the site was registered in the Russian Federation from 2013 through last July. Starting last November, the site’s registration was moved to Panama, The website has always been anonymously registered and its owners could not be reached for comment.

Then there is this. Shocked the Russian troll or ignorant dimwit NW30 aka: NitWit30, has not posted a link to it:

“Left-wing activists bring a stack of Bibles to burn in front of the federal courthouse in Portland,” Malaysia-based Donald Trump supporter Ian Miles Cheong wrote in a tweet on Aug. 1, with a video attached.

The same day, the conservative news outlet The Federalist wrote: “A video posted to Twitter on Saturday shows rioters holding Black Lives Matter signs tossing Bibles into a fire. Bystanders stood and watched as the flames licked away at the pages of the books.”

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, a 2016 Republican presidential candidate, soon weighed in. “This is who they are,” he tweeted.

This is who they are. https://t.co/02bNNnJuG4

— Ted Cruz (@tedcruz) August 1, 2020

The video that started a rolling viral outrage across mostly right-wing news platforms and social-media timelines shows a gaggle of young people in masks chanting anti-Trump slogans as one person lights aflame what looks like a graphic novel. Another masked individual then drops an American flag on top of it. Twigs and newspapers are later added to the fire.

The video came from Ruptly, a Russian-government-backed news agency. “[T]he Portland Bible burnings appear to be one of the first viral Russian disinformation hits of the 2020 presidential campaign,” The New York Times reported Tuesday.

Trump retweets Russian propaganda about Biden that US intel agencies say is intended to influence 2020 election

Quote:
(CNN)President Donald Trump on Sunday night retweeted Russian propaganda about former Vice President Joe Biden that the US intelligence community recently announced was part of Moscow's ongoing effort to "denigrate" the Democrat ahead of November's election.

Late Sunday, Trump amplified a tweet that contained audiotapes of a 2016 conversation between Biden and then-Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko -- material that was released earlier this year by Andriy Derkach, a Ukrainian lawmaker named by the US intelligence community in its August 7 statement about Russia's disinformation campaign against Biden. US authorities labeled Derkach's efforts as disinformation because they are intentionally designed to spread false or misleading information about Biden.
By retweeting material that the US government has already labeled as propaganda -- and doing so with the 2020 Democratic National Convention kicking off on Monday -- Trump demonstrated once again that he is willing to capitalize on foreign election meddling for his own political gain.
There is no proof of wrongdoing on the tapes of Biden and Poroshenko. But Trump and his allies, as well as Kremlin-controlled media outlets, have used the tapes to foment conspiracies about Biden's dealings with Ukraine.
'A willing mouthpiece'
Sen. Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, responded to Trump's retweet Monday by calling out the President for amplifying Russian disinformation.
"The President of the United States should never be a willing mouthpiece for Russian propaganda," Warner wrote in a tweet of his own.

FBI Director Wray warns of ‘very active efforts’ by Russians to influence the 2020 election

Quote:
FBI Director Christopher Wray warned lawmakers Thursday that Russia is actively interfering in the upcoming U.S. presidential election by spreading misinformation about Democratic nominee Joe Biden.
Wray described Russian efforts as a “steady drumbeat of misinformation” that he said could undercut American voters’ confidence in the democratic process.
The latest warning comes less than 50 days before Election Day, although voters have already begun voting early through mail and other means.

HBO presents an analysis of Russia's 2016 U.S. election influence efforts on HBO over four hours next Wed and Thur beginning at 9 PM (your time zone may vary). The lengthy discussion describes it as well-supported, factual, fascinating, revealing, and eye-opening.

I'll bet their efforts will be doubled this year, but won't come close to the influence Google and Facebook have already been caught at (and even admitted to by Zuckerburg in open testimony*) on every important matter facing us.

* We will decide the truth of each issue and delete any misinformation to protect the public, or equally chilling words to that effect. Who appointed this arrogant twit God?

("Prove it" my ass. It was right there, live, lips moving and all, on CSPAN, and is often replayed right up through today on real news sources. Wise up.)
