'Borat' producer says Rudy Giuliani tried to have the crew arrested after appearing to put a hand down his pants in front of a young female actor

The producer behind the "Borat" sequel revealed on Saturday that Rudy Giuliani called New York City police to get the film's crew arrested.

Speaking at a panel, producer Monica Levinson said the former New York mayor and attorney to President Donald Trump accused the crew of extortion.

"He claimed we were trying to extort him at the time, which we didn't ask for anything," Levinson said while on a Producers Guild of America panel. "He called all of his New York City cops and said extortion, which was a federal crime."

The film, "Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm," features Giuliani in a hotel bedroom with Tutar - a character played by Maria Bakalova, the daughter of film lead Sacha Baron Cohen.

Giuliani is seen in a hotel room with Tutar, a news reporter at this point in the movie who's meeting Giuliani for an interview.

At one point in the scene, Tutar and Giuliani are drinking scotch when she takes him into a hotel suite bedroom for the interview.

Giuliani can be seen tapping the small of her back with his hand. Another angle shows Tutar trying to remove the microphone wire from Giuliani's shirt as he's sitting on the bed. He then lies down on the bed with his hand down his pants.

Bakalova at the time of the scene's shooting was 23. Her character, however, was just 15.

The scene exploded on social media and the news. Giuliani, after the scene came out, tried to justify what appeared to be inappropriate behavior.

He said he had just been "tucking in my shirt" into his pants in the moment.

"The Borat video is a complete fabrication. I was tucking in my shirt after taking off the recording equipment. At no time before, during, or after the interview was I ever inappropriate," Giuliani wrote in a tweet. "If Sacha Baron Cohen implies otherwise he is a stone-cold liar."

The former mayor of New York City said the scene was retaliation for the work he's been doing to help Trump get re-elected. (The footage was apparently shot in July, before Giuliani's recent attempts to discredit Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.)

"They'll do anything. They've attacked me over everything possible, investigated every business dealing I've ever had," he said in an interview with WABC radio. "And now the idiot Borat is going after me with a totally sensationalized false account of a ridiculous movie I guess that he's done."

Insider's Sarah Al-Arshani contributed reporting.

Rudy Giuliani Sued by Dominion Voting Systems Over False Election Claims

Dominion Voting Systems filed a defamation lawsuit on Monday against Rudolph W. Giuliani, the lawyer for Donald J. Trump and former mayor of New York City who played a key role in the former president’s monthslong effort to subvert the 2020 election.

The 107-page lawsuit, filed in the Federal District Court in Washington, accuses Mr. Giuliani of carrying out “a viral disinformation campaign about Dominion” made up of “demonstrably false” allegations, in part to enrich himself through legal fees and his podcast.

The suit seeks damages of more than $1.3 billion and is based on more than 50 statements Mr. Giuliani made at legislative hearings, on Twitter, on his podcast and in the conservative news media, where he spun a fictitious narrative of a plot by one of the biggest voting machine manufacturers in the country to flip votes to President Biden.

Mr. Giuliani, one of Mr. Trump’s closest advisers and confidants, has faced continuing fallout for his highly visible efforts to reverse the election outcome. This month, the chairman of the New York State Senate’s judiciary committee formally requested that the state court system strip Mr. Giuliani of his law license.

In a statement released by text message late Monday morning, Mr. Giuliani said that the lawsuit amounted to intimidation and that he was contemplating a countersuit.

“Dominion’s defamation lawsuit for $1.3B will allow me to investigate their history, finances, and practices fully and completely,” Mr. Giuliani said. “The amount being asked for is, quite obviously, intended to frighten people of faint heart. It is another act of intimidation by the hate-filled left-wing to wipe out and censor the exercise of free speech, as well as the ability of lawyers to defend their clients vigorously. As such, we will investigate a countersuit against them for violating these Constitutional rights.”

On his radio show on Monday afternoon, Mr. Giuliani seemed to welcome a trial.

“We’ll have a nice fight, a real fight, and by fight, I don’t mean, don’t mean any words of violence,” Mr. Giuliani said. “I fight in the courtroom, you know? That’s what I always mean when I talk about fight. We fight in the courtroom. We fight in the debate hall. I got a pretty good record in court. And I’m a damn good investigator.”

Taken together with a lawsuit the company filed this month against Sidney Powell, another lawyer who was allied with Mr. Trump, the suit represents a point-by-point rebuke of one of the more outlandish conspiracy theories surrounding last year’s election. The president’s allies had contended that the voting machine company — which was also used in states during Mr. Trump’s victory in the 2016 election, has been tested by government agencies, and was used in states Mr. Trump carried in 2020 — was somehow involved in a rigged election, partly as a result of ties to a long-deceased Venezuelan dictator.

“Dominion was not founded in Venezuela to fix elections for Hugo Chávez,” the suit says. “It was founded in 2002 in John Poulos’s basement in Toronto to help blind people vote on paper ballots.” The suit later adds that the headquarters for the company’s United States subsidiary is in Denver.

Laying out a timeline of Mr. Giuliani’s comments about Dominion on Twitter, his podcast and Fox News, the company notes that Mr. Giuliani avoided mentioning Dominion in court, where he could have faced legal ramifications for falsehoods. “Notably, not a single one of the three complaints signed and filed by Giuliani and other attorneys for the Trump Campaign in the Pennsylvania action contained any allegations about Dominion,” the lawsuit says.

The lawsuit also links Mr. Giuliani’s false statements about Dominion to the riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6, noting that he mentioned the company in his speech at a rally for Mr. Trump before the attack, as well as numerous times on social media as the Capitol was breached.

“Having been deceived by Giuliani and his allies into thinking that they were not criminals — but patriots ‘Defend[ing] the Republic’ from Dominion and its co-conspirators — they then bragged about their involvement in the crime on social media,” the suit states.

Thomas A. Clare, a lawyer representing Dominion, said that the riot had not factored into the decision to sue Mr. Giuliani, but that it did show just how seriously Mr. Trump’s followers had taken the falsehoods told about the election.

they had enough incriminating info to go after such a high-level right winger... to get a search warrant.

Federal investigators executed a search warrant at Rudy Giuliani’s apartment, stepping up a criminal investigation into his dealings in Ukraine.

The federal authorities have been largely focused on whether Mr. Giuliani illegally lobbied the Trump administration in 2019 on behalf of Ukrainian officials and oligarchs, who at the same time were helping Mr. Giuliani search for dirt on Donald Trump’s political rivals, including President Biden.

The FBI warned Rudolph W. Giuliani in late 2019 that he was the target of a Russian influence operation aimed at circulating falsehoods intended to damage President Biden politically ahead of last year’s election, according to people familiar with the matter.

The warning was part of an extensive effort by the bureau to alert members of Congress and at least one conservative media outlet, One America News, that they faced a risk of being used to further Russia’s attempt to influence the election’s outcome, said several current and former U.S. officials. All spoke on the condition of anonymity because the matter remains highly sensitive.

Giuliani received the FBI’s warning while deeply involved with former president Donald Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign and related activities in Ukraine to surface unflattering or incriminating information about the Biden family. The revelation comes as the FBI this week seized Giuliani’s cellphone and other electronic devices as part of a long-running criminal investigation into whether the onetime New York mayor and personal attorney for Trump acted as an unregistered foreign agent.

Deliverables were delivered': Despite denials, much of the Giuliani case is on the record

Quote:
Rachel Maddow looks at the contours of what has been reported about the investigation of Rudy Giuliani and whether the deals Giuliani made in Ukraine will be construed as payments that could spell legal trouble. Correction: This clip was republished after NBC News and other news organizations corrected their original reporting to exclude mentions of reports that the FBI told Rudy Giuliani he was the target of a Russian influence campaign. Sources now confirm to NBC News that while the FBI prepared a briefing for Giuliani, it was never delivered to him, in part because of concerns it might complicate the ongoing criminal investigation of Giuliani.

To borrow the infamous line of his ex-presidential ex-client, it looks like Rudolph W. Giuliani is “going to go through some things.” Like possibly being charged with a crime. Worse, some people who might have tried to save him from that fate might have actually guaranteed it.

In law and in life, things have a way of coming full circle. The quoted words come from the former president’s supposedly “perfect” phone call with Ukraine’s president, and described what could happen to the American ambassador there, Marie L. Yovanovitch. It was Giuliani’s relentless efforts that got her recalled.

Now that’s what might land poor Giuliani in the dock. Last week, the FBI showed up at his apartment at dawn, armed with a search warrant that reportedly focused on Yovanovitch’s firing. Questions the seized materials might answer: On whose behalf was Giuliani acting? Just Donald J. Trump, legal client? Or was Giuliani also representing Ukrainian officials who wanted the corruption-fighting diplomat gone?

If the latter, Giuliani might have violated the Foreign Agents Registration Act. Giuliani denies any obligation to register — because, he says, he drafted his retainer agreements to disclaim lobbying or foreign representation.

Whatever happens, the investigation marks yet another step in Giuliani’s unimaginable fall from grace. The once-respected former federal prosecutor, New York mayor (“America’s mayor”!), presidential candidate and possible Cabinet pick, stands reduced to a laughingstock: shirt-tucking star of the “Borat” sequel, headliner for a news conference at Four Seasons Total Landscaping, and now defendant in a $1.3 billion defamation suit for having claimed that the long-dead Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chávez founded a voting software company that helped steal the presidency from Trump.

What Giuliani has said about Hunter Biden’s purported laptop
Rudolph W. Giuliani has at times given conflicting accounts of what he did with hard drives purportedly belonging to President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden. (JM Rieger/The Washington Post)
Even before he peddled nutso election-fraud claims, Giuliani had firmly established himself as one of the world’s worst lawyers. He’s the bumbler who blurted out on national TV that his client, Individual-1, had reimbursed a $130,000 payment made to a porn star, a transaction that triggered a sprawling and ongoing New York grand jury investigation into Trump’s overall business affairs.

ADVERTISING

The former first client wasn’t too thrilled about that. But he ought to be even more ticked about what came next: not one, but two, impeachments, both Rudy-enabled. Nobody — other than perhaps the impeachee himself — did more than Giuliani to get his client charged with high crimes and misdemeanors.

According to a transcript published last week of a Giuliani phone call with one of the Ukrainian president’s top aides, it was Giuliani who first urged the Ukrainians to announce a bogus investigation of Joe and Hunter Biden so Ukraine could have “a much better relationship” with the United States. It was Giuliani who told the media that his Ukrainian adventure “isn’t foreign policy,” but was meant to “be very, very helpful to my client.”

It wasn’t. It also wasn’t helpful for Giuliani to fill the former guy’s head with fertilizer for the Big Lie about the 2020 vote. But at least he’s loyal, standing alongside his client — and urging “trial by combat” — at the insurrectionist rally on Jan. 6 that led to impeachment No. 2.

All this boggles the mind of anyone who has followed Giuliani’s lengthy career. It’s as though someone dropped him on his head. Still, as a former associate attorney general and former U.S. attorney, he surely understands that federal search warrants against lawyers don’t just fall off trees. The Justice Department doesn’t like them, out of respect for the attorney-client privilege. Prosecutors will use them if they have really strong evidence a lawyer is up to no good, and if very senior personnel in Washington agree. And, of course, only with the blessing of a federal court.

That’s terrible news for Giuliani — just ask Michael Cohen, the last presidential lawyer raided by the FBI. It’s not good for the former guy, either. Giuliani’s travails have left him facing potentially staggering legal bills, which in apparent desperation he’s beseeching Trump to pay. And most important, Giuliani faces the prospect of jail.

If Giuliani has anything to offer prosecutors to save himself, it would have to be Trump, the only bigger fish left. And it was arguably criminal for the then-president to have used his official powers to try to coerce foreign officials into aiding his reelection campaign. In fact, Giuliani’s admission that he wasn’t conducting foreign policy, but merely helping Trump personally, is exactly what would make the scheme prosecutable. The former guy just might want to rethink stiffing Giuliani on those bills.

2019 audio shows Rudy Giuliani pushing a Ukrainian official to investigate Biden in exchange for better relations with Trump

Shortly after the Giuliani call, Trump pressed Ukraine's president to investigate Biden, which prompted his first impeachment.

CNN has published a leaked 2019 audio of Rudy Giuliani, the lawyer of then-President Donald Trump, pressing an Ukrainian official Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden.

During the call - between Giuliani, a US diplomat, and an advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, per CNN - Giuliani is heard repeatedly saying that Zelensky should publicly announce an investigation into Biden, who a presidential candidate at the time.

Listen to parts of the call here:

Giuliani said that doing so could create better relations between Trump and Ukraine, and a meeting between him and Zelensky.

"If he could say something like that, on his own, in conversation, it would go a long way. It would go a long way with the President to solve the problems," Giuliani can be heard saying.

CNN reported that the call took place in July 2019, and was before the July 25, 2019, call between Trump and Zelensky in which Trump pressed him to investigate the activities of Joe Biden's family in Ukraine.

That call led to Trump's impeachment by the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives in December 2019. He was acquitted by the Republican-controlled Senate in January.

Witnesses testified during Trump's first impeachment hearings that there was no evidence that Biden or his son Hunter ran afoul of US laws or foreign policy when the younger Biden joined the board of the Ukrainian energy company Burisma, though the State Department official George Kent said the optics were questionable.

Giuliani is currently under a federal criminal investigation focusing on whether he broke foreign lobbying laws.

Giuliani's law license suspended over false Trump election claims

Quote:
NEW YORK (Reuters) -Rudy Giuliani's New York law license was suspended on Thursday, after a state appeals court found he had lied in arguing that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from his client, former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Giuliani, 77, a former U.S. Attorney in Manhattan and New York City mayor, was punished for making "demonstrably false and misleading" statements that widespread voter fraud undermined the election, which Democrat Joe Biden won.

Citing the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, the Appellate Division said Giuliani's eagerness to trumpet false claims of a rigged election could erode public confidence in the election process, a hallmark of American democracy, and the legal profession.

"This country is being torn apart by continued attacks on the legitimacy of the 2020 election and of our current president, Joseph R. Biden," the court said.

"Where, as here, the false statements are being made by (Giuliani), acting with the authority of being an attorney, and using his large megaphone, the harm is magnified."

The court also said that the suspension, which takes effect immediately, could become permanent.

Giuliani could not immediately be reached for comment.

John Leventhal and Barry Kamins, two lawyers for Giuliani, said they were disappointed with the decision.

"Our client does not pose a present danger to the public interest," they said in a joint statement. "We believe that once the issues are fully explored at a hearing Mr. Giuliani will be reinstated as a valued member of the legal profession that he has served so well in his many capacities for so many years."

Thursday's court decision adds to the legal problems for Giuliani who as New York City mayor won wide praise for his response to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Giuliani, a Republican, is defending against a $1.3 billion lawsuit where Dominion Voting Systems accused him of defamation for claiming its machines helped flip votes to Biden from Trump.

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan are separately examining Giuliani's dealings in Ukraine, including whether he violated lobbying laws by acting as an unregistered foreign agent while working as Trump's lawyer.

Giuliani has denied wrongdoing. Federal agents seized 18 devices, including cellphones and computers, in April 28 raids of Giuliani's home and office for the Ukraine probe.

'INCREDIBLY SERIOUS'

The appeals court said Giuliani made numerous false statements about voting in Arizona, Georgia and Pennsylvania, including that hundreds of thousands of absentee ballots or votes had been improperly counted.

It highlighted a Pennsylvania court hearing on Nov. 17 where Giuliani alleged widespread voter fraud, though his formal written complaint on Trump's behalf made no mention of it.

The court also criticized Giuliani's unsubstantiated claims of voting by dead people, including the boxing heavyweight champion Joe Frazier, who died in 2011.

"We find that there is evidence of continuing misconduct, the underlying offense is incredibly serious, and the uncontroverted misconduct in itself will likely result in substantial permanent sanctions," the court said.

Giuliani had unsuccessfully argued that the grievance committee's investigation into his conduct violated his constitutional right to free speech.

Still, the suspension does not act as a muzzle on Giuliani's ability to speak publicly.

That contrasts with Twitter's permanent ban and Facebook's two-year suspension of Trump from their respective platforms.

Brian Faughnan, a Tennessee lawyer specializing in attorney disciplinary proceedings, said suspensions such as Giuliani's are often reserved for lawyers who commit crimes or stole client money.

Giuliani received his law license in 1969.

He began representing Trump in April 2018 as federal Special Counsel Robert Mueller was probing Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
