The Secret Service had asked for a room close to the president. But Mar-a-Lago said it was too late. The room was booked. Would agents like a room across the street from the president, instead?

“I do have a Beach Cabana available,” a staff member at President Trump’s club in Palm Beach, Fla., wrote in March 2017 to a Secret Service agent seeking rooms for the upcoming weekend. “Across the street at the Beach Club, North end of the pool.”

The next time, the Secret Service didn’t take the same risk. It paid Mar-a-Lago to book rooms for two weeks at a time — locking them up before the club could rent them to others, according to newly released records and emails.

For Trump’s club, it appeared, saying no to the Secret Service had made it a better customer. The agency was paying for rooms on nights when Trump wasn’t even visiting — to be ready just in case Trump decided to go, one former Trump administration official said.

Secretly recorded audio of Trump’s sister prompts new call for investigation into his admission to Penn

Quote:
A professor at the University of Pennsylvania has renewed a request to investigate how President Trump was admitted to the school in 1966, citing what he called “new evidence” on secretly recorded tapes in which Trump’s sister says a friend took his entrance exam.

The professor, Eric W. Orts, is one of six faculty members who asked Penn’s provost earlier this summer to launch an investigation into how Trump transferred into the school. He noted that the president’s niece, Mary Trump, wrote in her book published in July that the president paid someone to take his SATs.

The provost, Wendell E. Pritchett, replied to Orts on July 20 that “we certainly share your concerns about these allegations and the integrity of our admissions process. However, as you suggest in your message, we have determined that this situation occurred too far in the past to make a useful or probative factual inquiry possible. If new evidence surfaces to substantiate the claim in the future, we will continue to be open to investigating it.”

Orts, a professor of legal studies and business ethics at the Wharton School, said he contacted Pritchett after The Washington Post on Saturday published a story that included audio of conversations Mary Trump recorded in 2018 and 2019 with Maryanne Trump Barry, the president’s sister.

In one tape, Barry said she did her brother’s homework for him and that “I drove him around New York City to try to get him into college.” She said Donald Trump “went to Fordham for one year [actually two years] and then he got into University of Pennsylvania because he had somebody take the exams.”

In their initial letter, the six professors wrote that “failing to investigate an allegation of fraud at such a level broadcasts to prospective students and the world at large that the playing field is not equal, that our degrees can be bought, and that subsequent fame, wealth, and political status will excuse past misconduct.” The school’s rejection of the July request was reported by the Daily Pennsylvanian, a student-run publication.

After The Post published the recording online last weekend, Orts said he emailed Pritchett that the audio constituted the kind of “new evidence” that the provost said was needed to launch an investigation.

Orts said he had not heard back from Pritchett. The provost and his spokesman did not respond to a request for comment. Orts is a registered Democrat but said he is seeking the investigation on moral, not political, grounds. He provided the text of Pritchett’s email to The Post, and he said he wrote the follow-up request individually, not with the group that asked for the initial investigation.

Barry said in one of the tapes that the person who took the test was named Joe Shapiro. Trump knew a person with that name at Penn, but his widow and sister told The Post that he would have never taken a test for Trump, and they said he didn’t know Trump until he attended Penn, so the timing was not right. Mary Trump has said it was a different Shapiro, but that person has not come forward or been identified.

The White House declined to comment for this article. Before the existence of the tapes was known, White House spokeswoman Sarah Matthews said the allegation that someone took the SATs for Trump was “completely false.” Trump, responding on Saturday to The Post’s report about the tapes, said “Who cares?” and did not dispute their authenticity. Barry has not responded to requests for comment.

Starting in 1964, Trump went to Fordham in New York City for his freshman and sophomore years and then transferred in 1966 to Penn’s undergraduate Wharton School of Finance. Trump has said that he was admitted to the “the hardest school to get into, the best school in the world,” calling it “super genius stuff.”

Trump has contrasted his own intellect with that of others and made an issue of releasing transcripts, saying in 2011 that he questioned how President Obama got into Columbia University and Harvard Law School and challenged him to substantiate how he was admitted.

“How does a bad student go to Columbia and then to Harvard?” Trump asked in a 2011 Associated Press interview. “I’m thinking about it, I’m certainly looking into it. Let him show his records.”

Trump has not released his own records. His former attorney, Michael Cohen, testified before Congress last year that Trump “directed me to threaten his high school, his colleges and the College Board to never release his grades or SAT scores.” Cohen cited a letter he wrote to Fordham in May 2015, shortly before Trump launched his presidential campaign, that threatened legal action if the school released any of Trump’s records.

An investigation by The Post last year found that Trump’s claim that Wharton was the hardest school to enter was not substantiated.

This is Trump's relation to the common man:

Quote:
has only ever been successful as a showman, not at running actual businesses.”

Seth Hanlon, Democratic policy adviser: “In 2017, a single worker without children who made $18,000 would have paid $760 in federal income tax. Donald Trump paid $750.”

Avi Asher-Schapiro, of Thomson Reuters Foundation: “Perhaps the most instructive thing re: Trump taxes is the $75K deduction for haircuts. It really illustrates how easy it is for rich people to manipulate their tax burden, & pay less than us. Trump’s haircuts are a business expense […] but not my entire rent when I work from home.”

Trump's tax story bind: Admit business failures or lying on taxes

Quote:

Rachel Maddow points out that one of the key takeaways from the New York Times' story on Donald Trump's taxes is that the tax record portrays Trump as a terrible, money-losing businessman, unless he'd like to explain that he was illegally lying about business losses to avoid paying taxes.

add this 21 million dollar bailout by another right wing billionaire to bail out trump who obviously was broke in 2016. His german bank Deutsche Bank funded by Russians would not even loan him 21 million. This money by another right wing billionaire appears to be another illegal campaign contribution.

Gee no investigation by Barr... just another cover-up.

Manhattan district attorney escalates Trump financial probe

Quote:
The Washington Post cites "people familiar with the matter" to report that the Manhattan District Attorney's Office has now hired a forensic accounting firm to help in its long-running investigation of Donald Trump's past and present business dealings. A series of press investigations during the Trump administration have suggested that the Trump Organization has for decades engaged not just in suspicious tax dodges, but bank fraud and other financial fraud; Trump himself still remains uncharged for the "hush money" financial deals that sent his longtime fixer, Michael Cohen, to prison.

There seems to be no indication of precisely when the move was made, but it is treated as a new escalation; the use of outside experts to probe Trump company records may be a prelude to being able to use those experts as witnesses in upcoming legal actions. The timing certainly seems conspicuous. Trump will be leaving office in just three weeks, at which point he will lose the supposed presidential "immunity" from criminal charges that he has used to stonewall each investigation. He will be, as of the afternoon of Jan. 20, unquestionably indictable.

But there are three weeks between now and then, and Trump's bender of self-serving pardons of associates will no doubt be continuing. He has already pardoned each of those that lied to federal investigators about his campaign's efforts to utilize and benefit from the Russian government's espionage efforts aimed at sabotaging his opponent in his 2016 presidential bid. One presumes the next set of pardons will be broadly aimed at immunizing himself and his children from the financial crimes uncovered in those past press reports, but it will only work to block federal charges, not state ones. This is New York probing his business dealings, not the ever-compliant Department of Justice.

So we can read the tea leaves here, but ... hmm. It doesn't tell us much. It's possible District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr.'s office has hired new outside help because something of special note was found in the Trump Organization's finances; it's just as possible they were hired because the office's in-house experts simply lacked the capacity to follow each number and lead. It's possible this new escalation was intentionally leaked in order to signal that the investigation is in high gear and prepared for Trump's imminent loss of presidential privilege; it's very possible it was not supposed to leak as it gives the currently fuming and unstable Trump three weeks to mull whether there are any additional presidential powers that can be used in retribution.

Granted, Trump is currently preoccupied with an attempt to overthrow the United States government, but investigations that could someday put him in jail seem to still get his prompt attention.

All we know is that in New York, the probe into whether Donald Trump has gained what fortune he still has by being a lifelong crook is still not just ongoing, but expanding. That's going to piss him off, yet again. This still probably all ends with him fleeing the country, claiming that he is simply too good for us and we are too mean to him. It will pain him to leave Mar-a-Lago, but he left his New York tower over far more petty insults. And he wants to grift off a new presidential run, to be sure, but there's nothing to say his adoring base won't keep donating to that cause even after Dear Leader has sauntered off to a sympathetic kleptocracy.

Florida Lawmaker Wants Trump’s Private Club Shut Down Over COVID-19 Rules

Quote:
Less than a week after maskless holiday revelers rang in the New Year at Donald Trump's private Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, one Florida lawmaker says the members-only facility should be shut down for flouting county coronavirus regulations.

In a letter sent to Palm Beach County and published by West Palm Beach's WPTV, state Representative Omari Hardy argued the president's club should be fined and temporarily shut down for violating the county's mask mandate.

"Mar-a-Lago is a club. A club is a business. Businesses must comply with Palm Beach County's mask order," Hardy, a Democrat who represents a district that includes portions of the county, wrote.

Hardy continued: "It is common knowledge that the President hosts a New Year's Eve celebration at Mar-a-Lago every year. I wonder why the County was not prepared to enforce its mask mandate at the New Year's Eve celebration hosted at Mar-a-Lago last night. This event has the potential to be a super-spreader event. We cannot allow businesses and business owners to openly flout our mask order."

what a great man... going to give us some transparency...

https://www.radio.com/waok/news/national/congressman-hank-johnson-says-trumps-crimes-will-be-exposed

Congressman Hank Johnson came on The Rashad Richey Morning Show to discuss the importance of early voting in Georgia for the US Senate runoff election. With Jon Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock representing the Democratic Party and Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue representing the Republican Party, Georgia is at the political center of the universe.

When Rashad asked the Congressman about potential future investigations after Trump is no longer in power, Representative Johnson made it clear that the public should be made aware of Trump's crimes while president .

With Trump out of office, the Biden administration decides if Congress can have the ex-president's tax returns

The Biden administration has been given two weeks to decide whether or not to drop the previous administration's opposition to releasing Donald Trump's tax returns, The Washington Post reported.

In 2019, Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee sued to obtain the former president's IRS filings. On Friday, the US judge in the case, Trevor McFadden, elected to give the new president's team some time to reconsider what government lawyers will argue in the case.

A key objection to handing over the returns was that it would violate the separation of powers between the legislative and executive branches of government. With Trump no longer president, this no longer applies, the Post noted.

"It would be a former president trying to stop a political branch, rather than one branch suing another. At least that's my instinct," McFadden said Friday.

A spokesperson for the Ways and Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over tax issues, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In September, The New York Times obtained some of Trump's tax returns, revealing that he paid just $750 in federal income taxes in both 2016 and 2017.

Last summer the US Supreme Court ruled that Trump could not stop New York investigators from issuing subpoenas for his tax returns and other financial documents. Prosecutors there are investigating the former president's business empire and whether it broke state law.
