Hi Gang,
Take a look at windward1's link to a gravity wave as it passes over people on the beach at Santa Cruz:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlwPwdP5cq0
From April 28: These two satellite images, the first wide-angle the second a close-up speak for themselves. You may need to google Gravity Waves.

Please try not to always leave San Luis Res. out of the equation. To sailors in the south bay it is closer than the Delta and often would seem a similar forecast.
Had a great session there Saturday. 4.7 and below and quite steady.

Yesterday was kind of fascinating. The Westerly was "established" at Candlestick (say 10-15 with patches) but at Coyote it only reached to the outside: you could see the white caps at the fishermen point but very little inside. Then a south-south-west wind came up, about 5-10 knots, and in a half hour or so it looked like it "pushed" the westerly away until no more white caps were in sight. Straight off-shore wind at Coyote! Never changed back causing two Kite rescues (Windfoilers were still going). Back toward home at 5pm, I stopped at the Stick and the westerly was still on, very weak, but it increased in intensity, by 5:45 it was at 12-16 knots.
An afternoon in the middle of a wind swirl!

Hi Mike of iWindsurf,
I believe this is a gravity wave near to the ground at Natural Bridges.

I do not believe iWindsurf had it in the foercast for that day...

Hi Windward 1,
Great video! Yes, that is a gravity wave going over Santa Cruz. They can be pretty scary if you don't know what is happening.
My post shows gravity waves as seen from the GOES 17 satellite yesterday while the video shows what a gravity wave looks like from the surface. From land don't see them in our area often since our topography disrupts them.
Usually, they don't strongly impact the surface wind. Here is a good article about the circumstances where they do stir up surface winds:

Thanks Mike,
I will read the article.
And I appreciate the GOES 17 Satellite post with the labels and arrows marking the various items including the gravity waves. I might have missed them without the labels. Impressive seeing what they look like from space.
Regards,
W1
