Uh oh,
Quote: | Average daily coronavirus cases have jumped sixfold since early October; hospitalizations have quadrupled since late October; and average daily deaths have nearly tripled in just the last month.
Cases: California averaged nearly 19,000 new coronavirus cases a day over the last week — that’s six times the number from early October, when the state was averaging 3,200 new cases a day over the same time period.
Driving the sharp increase is the inexorable jump in daily cases. California tallied its third largest total of coronavirus cases reported in a single day on Saturday: 21,528. That’s just a day after the state broke its all-time single-day record on Friday with 22,369.

Indeed that’s a problem. But as I noted in another thread, there are 38 states with higher per capita death rates. If the US death rate was as low as California’s, tens of thousands of people would still be alive. |

Trekking out to my research sites near North Carolina’s Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, I slog through knee-deep water on a section of trail that is completely submerged. Permanent flooding has become commonplace on this low-lying peninsula, nestled behind North Carolina’s Outer Banks. The trees growing in the water are small and stunted. Many are dead.
Throughout coastal North Carolina, evidence of forest die-off is everywhere. Nearly every roadside ditch I pass while driving around the region is lined with dead or dying trees.
As an ecologist studying wetland response to sea level rise, I know this flooding is evidence that climate change is altering landscapes along the Atlantic coast. It’s emblematic of environmental changes that also threaten wildlife, ecosystems, and local farms and forestry businesses.
Like all living organisms, trees die. But what is happening here is not normal. Large patches of trees are dying simultaneously, and saplings aren’t growing to take their place. And it’s not just a local issue: Seawater is raising salt levels in coastal woodlands along the entire Atlantic Coastal Plain, from Maine to Florida. Huge swaths of contiguous forest are dying. They’re now known in the scientific community as “ghost forests.” |
Not to worry. North Carolinians spend their time looking for dirt on California, and put their fingers in their ears when they hear words like climate change. |

A typical North Carolina politician?

BRENTWOOD — A man who was arrested here in connection with federal child exploitation charges earlier this month made a failed bid for North Carolina’s legislature a decade ago in which he highlighted his military experience, according to authorities.
In 2012, Jeremy David Adams, 44, ran for a seat on the North Carolina House of Representatives in the state’s Sixth District. He received 26 percent of the vote in the Republican primary, finishing third.
An entry on the website Ballotpedia, which tracks elections across the country, notes that Adams described himself as a combat veteran who served in Iraq in 2010 and graduated from West Point. It adds that Adams “described his political philosophy as Austrian economics, which includes ‘free markets, sound money, restrict inflation, reduce regulations for small businesses, increase production to raise standard of living’ in an email to the site.
Adams, currently jailed in the Bay Area and awaiting extradition to Ohio, is accused of traveling from North Carolina to Ohio to meet a 16-year-old girl. Authorities reportedly seized videos from Adams’ computer that showed him sexually abusing the girl. |

So Meadows tries to get the DOJ to investigate crazy rumors about the election. Is it the water, or too much barbecue? |
