So the AP—John Flesher—reports that the Trump administration has treated 6,736 square miles of Federal forest land—about half what Trump sought. Let’s compare that to the Obama Administration which developed a fire management strategy and increased land treatments to as much as 10,469 square miles in 2009.

I’ll wait patiently for mrgybe to apologize for the nonsense he posted.

Apparently Newsom doesn't think my opinions are nonsense.

Sensible people will want to tackle the immediate, huge problem created by mistaken forest management over decades. As Techno correctly states, we need to adapt to the reality of conditions on the ground; it will be revealing to see the actions taken by governments over the coming months and years. Will they redouble their global warming strategies, or will they finally focus on forest management? I'm betting on the latter.

Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a deal with legislative leaders Thursday on $536 million in additional funding to increase fire prevention in the parched state. While the Legislature has increased Cal Fire’s budget by hundreds of millions of dollars in recent years, adding additional helicopters, airplanes and firefighters, Thursday’s agreement centers largely on money for increasing the resiliency of California’s forests and other vulnerable areas.

The money would go toward forestry management, improvements in defensible space around rural homes, vegetation management. The agreement also provides money for “home hardening” — the desperately needed retrofitting of homes in wildfire-prone areas.

It’s still cherry blossom time, not yet cherry picking time. Nobody disagrees that we need to spend more managing forests—I have a colleague who wrote the book. The discussion on the thread that was just ignored was:

—global warming caused by burning fossil fuels has increased the need for forest management—and the cost;

—the Federal government owns the vast bulk of forest land in California, yet neither Trump nor the GOP increased funding for managing that land.

Sage? Spin.

I believe, moving forward, we need to recognize that the climate now is conducive to large fires. Burying our heads in the sand or claiming that the reason for the large fires is poor forest management is beside the point.

It is not beside the point. The constant drumbeat that global warming is the culprit for the Western wildfires deflects the focus and funding away from the primary culprit which is poor forest management. Biden just gave a speech on the wildfires and didn't even mention forest management; it was all climate change. The result of this type of deflection......for years, Federal and State governments have been pouring hundreds of billions into subsidizing windmills and solar panels, into providing large incentives to the well heeled to buy electric cars, and on and on........all while ignoring the tinderbox right on their doorstep. Those politicians and agencies responsible for forest management can all hold their hands up and say "Hey, it's not us, it global warming". The outcome is that there is more CO2 pouring into the atmosphere than has (purportedly) been saved by all these so-called "green" initiatives, and the same is likely to be repeated for years.

Unless you want to be breathing foul air for years, and sending it across the country, you all need to stop the politicking and focus on the priorities. A commenter in the WSJ nailed it when he said:

"I can't see why people don't understand that the best way to stop forest fires in California involves spending several trillion dollars to reduce the global temperature by a fraction of a degree over the course of several centuries."

Old buggy whip spent pages denying that climate change had anything to do with increases in fires. Denied that fires had increased. Singled out California for his British Raj scorn. Of course fires are burning well into Canada—800 at the moment. The biggest fire is in Oregon, the Bootleg fire—where they have been practicing state of the art forest management.

Do you suppose the fact that the fires are affecting air quality on the East coat will get through the spin?
