The report, which was supported by every Republican on the committee, was clear: "This Committee found no evidence of widespread or systematic fraud in Michigan’s prosecution of the 2020 election." |

Another GOP voter accused of casting a ballot for a dead relative
| Quote: | In the wake of Donald Trump's defeat last fall, Republicans launched a desperate search for illegally cast ballots to help justify the GOP's conspiracy theories. But as regular readers know, despite all the hysterical rhetoric, only a handful of legitimate allegations have been raised -- and some of the most notable examples involve Republicans casting illegal ballots on behalf of dead relatives.
We learned in early May, for example, about Pennsylvania's Bruce Bartman, who cast an absentee ballot in support of Donald Trump for his mother -- who died in 2008. Bartman pleaded guilty to unlawful voting, conceded he "listened to too much propaganda," and was sentenced to five years' probation.
A week later, the public learned of a stunning story out of Colorado, where Barry Morphew allegedly cast a pro-Trump ballot on behalf of his dead wife -- whom he's also accused of murdering. According to the arrest affidavit, asked why he submitted the illegal ballot, Morphew said, "Just because I wanted Trump to win." He added that he believed "all these other guys are cheating."
This week, NBC News reported on the latest example, this time out of Ohio.
Edward Snodgrass, who is a Porter Township trustee, has admitted to forging his dead father's signature on an absentee ballot and then voting again as himself, court records and other sources revealed. Snodgrass was busted after a Delaware County election worker questioned the signature on his father's ballot. A subsequent investigation revealed the ballot had been mailed to H. Edward Snodgrass on Oct. 6 — a day after the 78-year-old retired businessman died.
Snodgrass told NBC News he'd made "an honest error" by "trying to execute a dying man's wishes."
The report added that Snodgrass, as part of a plea agreement, "is expected to plead guilty to a reduced charge of falsification and [will] receive a sentence of three days in jail and a $500 fine."
Circling back to our earlier coverage, I think there are a handful of ways to look at incidents like these.
My first thought after seeing this news was to remember the case of Crystal Mason, who cast a provisional ballot in the 2016 while on supervised release for a federal conviction. She didn't know she was ineligible to vote, and her ballot was never counted, but Mason -- a Black woman -- was convicted of illegal voting and sentenced to five years in prison.
It's hard not to notice that White men like Edward Snodgrass and Bruce Bartman received vastly more lenient sentences, despite the fact that they knowingly cast illegal ballots on behalf of dead relatives.
My second thought was the expectation that Republicans may try to seize on news like this. "See?" I assume they'll say. "Voter fraud is real after all, which means sweeping new voter-suppression laws are fully justified."
But that remains the wrong response. What the Snodgrass story actually helps show is that when would-be criminals try to cheat, the existing system is strong enough to catch them, charge them, and convict them. This doesn't prove the need for voter-suppression laws; it helps prove the opposite.
As important as these details are, let's also not forget a related question: Wasn't a reward offered for this kind of information?
A couple of days after Joe Biden was declared the president-elect, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R) announced that he'd be willing to pay up to $1 million as a reward to those who could produce proof of voter fraud.
At the outset, this appeared to be unwise. As we've discussed, the Texas Republican was effectively arguing that he and his party assumed there was widespread fraud, but they couldn't prove it, so he hoped financial rewards would produce evidence Republicans couldn't find on their own. Patrick was basically telling the public, "We can't back up our talking points, so I'll pay you to help."
But now there's a related problem: now that there's real-world evidence of Trump voters committing fraud, will Patrick pay up? If I sent him a copy of this MaddowBlog post, would he send me a check that I'd promise to apply to a good cause?
Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman (D) tried to get his Texas counterpart to follow through on his offer, but as best as I can tell, the Democrat hasn't yet received any of the reward money. I wonder why that is.

The former attorney general told Karl that he knew Trump would push him to conduct investigations and confirm the president's frequently stated belief that the 2020 presidential election had been stolen from him — and that Barr suspected from the get-go that no widespread fraud had taken place.
He also said that Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell — understandably concerned about upcoming Senate runoffs in Georgia — encouraged him to speak out about the integrity of the election.
Barr's conclusion that there was no widespread fraud, which he shared with an Associated Press reporter at the start of December, drew the wrath of Trump, who spoke of himself in the third person.
“You must hate Trump. You must hate Trump," Barr quoted Trump as saying in a subsequent meeting.
Karl wrote: "Barr thought that the president was trying to control himself, but he seemed angrier than he had ever seen him."
Barr said he also told Trump that the president had undermined his own efforts by launching a scattershot, incoherent legal team ("a clown show") to challenge election results — something which he said Trump agreed with. |

The DOJ released the videos after CNN and other outlets sued for access. All of the officers involved in this incident worked for Washington, DC's police force. They were identified by initials in court filings.
Officer AW stepped out of a tunnel where police were congregated and into the crowd to help Rosanne Boyland, 34, a rioter and QAnon supporter who was trampled by the mob. She died of an accidental drug overdose, according to Washington, DC's chief medical examiner. Boyland's body is seen in some of the new videos, which also show her friend screaming for assistance.
Prosecutors say AW's body-worn camera video shows defendant Jack Whitton leaping over a barricade, knocking AW onto his back and attempting to wrestle away his baton. Over AW's head, other rioters hit the police line with flagpoles and metal poles. The crowd drags AW into the crowd while he pleads for help. Members of the crowd ignore the plea, one rioter leans down and shouts, "traitor." Much of the clip is from AW's perspective on the ground looking up.
The attack landed AW in the hospital, where he got staples in his head to stop the bleeding. Whitton was charged with several felonies, including assault. He hasn't yet entered a plea.
Another officer, C.M., tried to help his colleagues. CM's bodycam footage shows another officer dragged into the crowd. It also shows Boyland lying on the ground. This is the first footage the US government has released showing Boyland's death. She was one of a few Trump supporters who died in the attack.
Prosecutors say the footage then shows defendant Michael Lopatic rushing toward CM, attacking the officer and grabbing him by the head and punching him. CM's bodycam is dislodged and falls to the ground, briefly revealing a splatter of blood.
CM got a concussion that day, though it may have been caused when he was assaulted a second time later in the day in a different incident, according to court filings. Lopatic was charged with several felonies, including assault, and hasn't entered a plea yet.
The Justice Department released two bodycam clips from another officer. One clip shows the tug-of-war between the rioters and the officers who were trying to pull their colleague to safety. The officers are repeatedly pummeled with poles and what appear to be stolen police batons.
Another bodycam clip, recorded about 20 minutes later, shows police in a second tunnel, holding the line with riot shields. Rioters throw objects, hitting the shields. According to prosecutors, Whitton is the man who is heard in the clip, shouting at the police, "you're gonna die tonight" (He later boasted to friends, saying that "I fed him to the people," referring to the officer, according to court filings). |

The GOP's top lawyer said Rudy Giuliani's 2020 election lawsuits were 'a joke' and 'are getting laughed out of court'

In a November 2020 email obtained by The Washington Post, Justin Riemer, chief counsel at the Republican National Committee, urged a party spokesperson not to amplify the charges being made by Rudy Giuliani and Jenna Ellis, who filed dozens of lawsuits seeking to overturn President Joe Biden's victory.
"What Rudy and Jenna are doing is a joke and they are getting laughed out of court," Riemer wrote in the email to the RNC's Liz Harrington. "They are misleading millions of people who have wishful thinking that the president is going to somehow win this thing."
The Post reported Giuliani and other Trump allies tried to have Riemer fired.
In a statement provided to the newspaper, Riemer portrayed his criticism as legalistic. Prior to his role as chief counsel, Riemer worked as a lawyer for the Department of Education under Trump.
"I will say publicly now what I then said privately: I take issue with individuals who brought lawsuits that did not serve President Trump well and did not give him the best chance in court," he said.
The revelation comes as lawyers who sought to overturn the 2020 election are facing potential legal repercussions.
At a hearing on Monday, a federal judge, Linda Parker, said she was concerned that Sidney Powell and L. Lin Wood - pro-Trump conspiracy theorists - had pushed false and "bad faith" claims in court that they had not bothered to research. The lawyers, who sought to nullify President Biden's win in Michigan, face unspecified legal sanctions. |
