sailed from power towers out to wide open waters of Forebay! no weeds once past about 50' out!! Found nice rollers and ramps downwind of island(closest to north side)!! Lots of jibing to stay away from weeds on island side, short tacks!! |

Windsurfed the O'Neill Forebay today. Pretty fun.
Almost did not go. Water was low at about 219 feet elevation. I like it much better at 222. But there being no wind anywhere on the coast, I set out for The Lake. A friend texted me that the wind had died. Looked at the graph and sure enough it had. 12 knots. I was over half way there and decided to go anyway. Least I could do was give a weed report.
When I got there the wind had picked up to 16 knots. So I rigged a 5.8 on my Freeride board. There were a few islands of weeds a little ways from shore. Blobs of about 30 meters by 20 meters. I waded out past about 50 meters from the beach by the tree on the west side of the Forebay to have deep enough water to hop on and ride out between to weed beds. Outside things were not bad. Weed beds in some places, but they were below the surface even at 219 feet. Clear areas in more of the Forebay than I was expecting. I did spin out one time when a weed strand caught onto my True Ames Surfgrass Wave fin and would not let go. And occasionally after a wipeout in an area with weeds underneath I had strands wrapped around my ankles and some on the boom, but most of the time I was able to waterstart clean. I avoided coming too close to shore on either side, staying out near 50 meters from shore. I found that near the tree I could "anchor" my rig by flipping the board upside down so fin was up, and just setting the boom on the bottom in a sandy area with few weeds about 50 meters from shore. Go in, get some water or a snack and come back to the board, still in the same spot.
After about a half hour the wind picked up to 20 knots. I stayed with what I had, but was overpowered. If it had been earlier in the day I might have re-rigged. |

The Water Level was kind of Low and KSBW was ranting
about the blue green algae at San Luis but I think it has been like that
all summer as far as the threat in the Forebay.
Also I threw my back out a little putting the lawn mower away.
Anybody else out? |

Wow! I did not know about the danger warnings for blue green algae at San Luis! No one said anything at the kiosk. Explains why I saw only one fisherman.
My suggestion is to not go windsurfing there until it is gone. |

My guess is the blue green algae problem is no different than it's
been the last two years.
The fisherman have to do catch and release now though. |

The Danger Warning said boating was OK, Water Skiing and Jets skis and swimming were not. They did not mention windsurfing.
Has there been any reports of people or pets getting infected there this year or the previous two years? |

don't know
I haven't heard anything from the usual Santa Cruz crowd or David
that they have had a problem. I hadn't seen the sign's last time I was
there. If you had a problem I think you would know pretty fast.
I haven't heard of any reports of people getting sick. |

No signs at the Park. Saw these notifications on an internet search of blue green algae at San Luis Reservoir.
I have none of the symptoms. |
