When your entire party has only one philosophy--we're scared of fat Donny--then you just make up stuff.

In fact, it has been the left that pioneered free speech, in a world of US universities that tried to block it. Of course when they made progress, Reagan went after them.

A nice little history in the New Yorker: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2021/03/22/the-making-of-the-new-left

Prior to the Free Speech Movement, universities tried to control the content, both in the classrooms and in the plazas. They were molding the intellectual cogs for the corporate state, or at least that was the critique. But the left, with support at the time from college Republicans, forced the doors of free speech open.

What did they stand for? Things I pretty much agreed with then, and now:

Quote:
Still, the statement does not call for revolution or even an end to capitalism. Its politics are progressive: regulate private enterprise, shift spending from arms to domestic needs, expand democratic participation in the workplace and public policymaking, support decolonization movements, and advance civil rights by ridding the Democratic Party of its Southern segregationists, the Dixiecrats. (That problem took care of itself in the 1964 Presidential election, when the South flipped from solid blue to solid red.)

Republicans today repeat talking points about the hostility of universities and the young to free speech and in favor or woke and cancel culture. Pretty much nonsense--it was conservative Republicans who pushed back against the free speech movement. It is folks like Isobars and mrgybe who are afraid to have an honest debate, and simply "plonk", or cancel, views they don't agree with. And of course, it is the Republican party who, with only a few exceptions, tried to cancel the 2020 election.
