Gaetz investigation includes whether campaign funds were used to pay for travel and expenses

Quote:

Federal investigators looking into Rep. Matt Gaetz's relationships with young women have examined whether any federal campaign money was involved in paying for travel and expenses for the women, a person briefed on the matter said.

Investigators are examining whether the Florida Republican engaged in a relationship with a woman that began when she was 17 years old and whether his involvement with other young women broke federal sex trafficking and prostitution laws, according to that source and another person briefed on the matter.

Investigators are also pursuing allegations from witnesses and other evidence that Gaetz may have used cash and drugs in his dealings with young women, the sources said.

Gaetz has denied the allegations and has tried to portray the sex trafficking investigation as connected to an alleged extortion plot against him. People briefed on the matter say investigators don't believe the extortion claims are linked to the separate alleged sex crimes investigation of Gaetz that has been ongoing for months.

The Gaetz investigation is still in its early stages, according to sources familiar with the matter.

An attorney for Gaetz had no comment.

Gaetz information provided to investigators last year
The investigation of Gaetz began in the closing months of the Trump-era Justice Department under then-Attorney General William Barr and was initially part of a broader probe into trafficking allegations against another Florida politician.

Information that may connect Gaetz to a fake ID scheme at the center of the case against that second Florida politician, Joel Greenberg, was presented to federal investigators in a meeting early last year, according to two other people familiar with the matter.

In the meeting, which has not been previously reported, a witness provided evidence linking Gaetz to Greenberg, the former tax collector in Seminole County, Florida, who was arrested last year on charges that include sex trafficking of a minor and fabricating fake IDs.

Greenberg has pleaded not guilty and is set to go to trial later this year on the ID and sex trafficking charges, as well as charges that he stalked a former political rival.

News of the meeting offers details about the Justice Department's early awareness of the congressman's relationship with Greenberg.

According to one of the people familiar with the matter, an employee at the tax collector's office saw Greenberg and Gaetz on internal office surveillance video looking through driver licenses on a weekend evening.

In a text message exchange shared with CNN that the source said was between Greenberg and the employee, Greenberg confirmed he was in the office "showing congressman Gaetz what our operation looked like."

That witness shared the information with prosecutors from the local US attorney's office and US Secret Service agents investigating Greenberg's case in January 2020, the person familiar with the matter said.

The Secret Service regularly investigates federal financial crimes. There is no indication that the IDs seen being handled in the video were used for unlawful purposes.

As the head of the tax collector's office, Greenberg had access to driver licenses that people would surrender to the office. According to court documents in his case, Greenberg allegedly used surrendered licenses to create fake IDs.

In an August indictment, federal prosecutors accused Greenberg of unlawfully accessing a motor vehicle database to obtain and use the personal information of people including some who Greenberg "was engaged in 'sugar daddy' relationships" with. He is also accused of sex trafficking a child between the ages of 14 and 17 years old and unlawfully obtaining the photograph and driver identification number of that child.

The two people familiar with the matter said the congressman's weekend visit to the office took place in 2019.

Attorneys for Gaetz and Greenberg both declined to comment on the information presented in the meeting with investigators, as did spokespeople for the US attorney's office in Tampa and the Secret Service.

Gaetz showed lawmakers nude photos of women he claimed to have slept with: report

Quote:
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) showed photos of nude women who he claimed he had sex with to other lawmakers, multiple sources told CNN.

Two sources, who claim they were shown the material directly, said that the photos were "a point of pride" for Gaetz.

The sources also told the news outlet that Gaetz, 38, showed them the photos while conducting business on the House floor, adding that the Florida lawmaker displayed the images on his phone and talked about having sex with the women.

Drunk driving arrest and speeding tickets
Quote:
In 2008, Gaetz was arrested for driving under the influence as he was driving back from the Swamp, a nightclub on Okaloosa Island, Florida. Police recorded him driving 13 miles per hour over that area's speed limit[108] and noted that he had shown physical signs of intoxication. Gaetz initially denied that he had drunk alcohol, but later admitted to drinking two beers. He failed an eye test twice, then declined field sobriety tests. After Gaetz was arrested, he refused to take a breathalyzer test.[108]

Matt Gaetz's communications director resigns as congressman faces allegations of sexual misconduct

Quote:
Luke Ball, the communications director for Congressman Matt Gaetz, resigned from his position on Friday amid allegations that Gaetz had an inappropriate sexual encounter with a minor and a reported investigation into alleged violations of federal sex trafficking laws.

"The Office of Congressman Matt Gaetz and Luke Ball have agreed that it would be best to part ways," Gaetz's office said in a statement. "We thank him for his time in our office, and we wish him the best moving forward."

Ball has worked for Gaetz since February 2017, according to his LinkedIn profile, starting as an intern at the Pensacola, Florida, District Office and working his way up to become Communications Director in November 2019. Last year, Ball also founded RightLife Media, a social media marketing company.

Pelosi says Gaetz should be off key committee if allegations true
Ball has not returned CBS News' request for comment.

The resignation came in the wake of scathing New York Times reports saying Gaetz is under investigation by the Justice Department for possible violations of sex trafficking laws. The Times said he's also been accused of having inappropriate sexual encounters with a 17-year-old girl, whom Gaetz purportedly paid to travel with him. The Justice Department is investigating the situation, including whether Gaetz paid to have sex with women who were recruited online by former Seminole County, Florida tax collector Joel Greenberg, according to the Times.

The Washington Post
Gaetz is said to have boasted of his ‘access to women’ provided by friend charged in sex-trafficking case

Quote:
Rep. Matt Gaetz repeatedly boasted to people involved in Florida politics about women he met through a county tax collector who has since been charged by federal authorities with sex trafficking of a minor, according to two people who heard his comments directly.

They said the Republican congressman, first elected in 2016, also showed them videos on his phone of naked or topless women on multiple occasions, including at parties with Joel Greenberg, the former tax collector for Seminole County. The women appeared to be adults, and could be seen dancing, hanging out by a pool and, in one case, using a hula hoop without clothing, the people said.

“Matt was never shy about talking about his relationship to Joel and the access to women that Joel provided him,” said one of these people who, like others, spoke on the condition of anonymity to be candid. “What these videos implied was that there was something of a sexual nature going on with everyone.”

Investigators believe that he paid for sex with a number of women he met through Joel Greenberg — a former Florida tax collector who was indicted last year on a federal sex trafficking charge, among other offenses — people close to the investigation told The New York Times.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi yesterday called for an Ethics Committee inquiry into Gaetz’s involvement with the women, as revelations continue trickling out around the Justice Department investigation. Gaetz has denied paying for sex or sleeping with anyone underage, but it’s clear that the story is far from over. And he’s increasingly isolated: Few Republicans have spoken up in support of him, and today his own communications director, Luke Ball, resigned.

oh is this one a good read...

MATT GAETZ PROBABLY REGRETS PROVIDING RECEIPTS TO THE WOMEN HE ALLEGEDLY PAID FOR SEX

Quote:
When The New York Times reported on Tuesday that Matt Gaetz was under investigation for allegedly having sex with a minor and transporting her across state lines, the Florida congressman probably figured it was the worst day he was going to have for a while. But, surprise! The news about Gaetz has somehow gotten even grosser in the days since.

On Thursday, CNN reported that the Republican lawmaker allegedly showed nude photos of women he said he’d slept with to fellow lawmakers, including while on the House floor. Sources, including two who were personally shown the material, said Gaetz pulled up the images on his phone and bragged about all the sex he’d had with the women. “It was a point of pride,” one of the sources said. As CNN notes, there is no indication that the pictures are connected to the Department of Justice investigation, meaning this may be an entirely unrelated instance of Gaetz being a creepy, pathetic dude-bro.

Speaking of the DOJ investigation, though, also on Thursday the Times reported that the probe into Gaetz and indicted Florida politician Joel Greenberg is “focusing on their involvement with multiple women who were recruited online for sex and received cash payments.” Investigators are said to believe that Greenberg, the former tax collector in Seminole County, Florida—who was indicted last year on a federal sex trafficking charge, among other crimes—would meet the women through websites like Seeking Arrangement and then introduce them to Gaetz. According to the Times, “one of the women who had sex with both men also agreed to have sex with an unidentified associate of theirs in Florida Republican politics, according to a person familiar with the arrangement.”

Incredibly, Gaetz appears to have paid the women not just in cash but through mobile payment apps like Apple Pay, which of course generate receipts for transactions. The Times reviewed some of those receipts allegedly showing payments from Gaetz and Greenberg to one of the women, as well as an apparent payment from Greenberg to a second woman. The women reportedly told friends that the payments were for sex with Gaetz and Greenberg. Per the Times:

In encounters during 2019 and 2020, Mr. Gaetz and Mr. Greenberg instructed the women to meet at certain times and places, often at hotels around Florida, and would tell them the amount of money they were willing to pay, according to the messages and interviews. One person said that the men also paid in cash, sometimes withdrawn from a hotel ATM. Some of the men and women took ecstasy, an illegal mood-altering drug, before having sex, including Mr. Gaetz, two people familiar with the encounters said.

In some cases, Mr. Gaetz asked women to help find others who might be interested in having sex with him and his friends, according to two people familiar with those conversations. Should anyone inquire about their relationships, one person said, Mr. Gaetz told the women to say that he had paid for hotel rooms and dinners as part of their dates.

In a statement released Thursday night, the congressman’s office said, “Matt Gaetz has never paid for sex. Matt Gaetz refutes all the disgusting allegations completely. Matt Gaetz has never ever been on any such websites whatsoever. Matt Gaetz cherishes the relationships in his past and looks forward to marrying the love of his life.” A lawyer for Greenberg declined the Times’ request for comment. Greenberg has pleaded not guilty.

Incidentally, the women Gaetz allegedly paid for sex are separate from the 17-year-old girl he also allegedly had sex with. The minor in question is reportedly the same girl Greenberg was charged with sex trafficking. In June, the U.S. attorney’s office in Central Florida secured an initial indictment against Greenberg for allegedly stalking a political rival and using his elected office to make fake IDs. Which Gaetz apparently knows a little something about! Per the Daily Beast:

In late January 2020, U.S. Secret Service agents received information that Rep. Matt Gaetz had accompanied a Florida county tax official they were already investigating on an unusual nighttime visit to a government office—where the local official was allegedly making fake IDs, a source close to the investigation told the Daily Beast. That tip to the feds came in a text message conversation that Seminole County Tax Collector Joel Greenberg had with an employee explaining why they were both in the office one weekend two years earlier, according to this person. A timestamp visible in the text message thread indicated the conversation took place on Monday, April 16, 2018.

According to three people with direct knowledge of the incident: Greenberg visited the Lake Mary, Florida branch of his tax collection agency that weekend. Grainy surveillance footage captured Greenberg standing near a manager’s desk with another man. Greenberg forgot to set the alarm on the way out, which concerned the assistant branch manager when she walked into the office Monday morning. That employee was surprised to find that driver licenses—which are normally turned in when expired at the tax office for shredding—were scattered all over the desk instead of in the appropriate disposal basket. She reviewed the camera footage and alerted her boss, who in turn contacted Greenberg via text.

“Did you happen to visit the Lake Mary Office on the weekend?” the text message reportedly read.

Greenberg allegedly responded: “Yes I was showing congressman Gaetz what our operation looked like. Did I leave something on?”

According to the Times, Greenberg is potentially facing decades in prison stemming from a whopping three dozen charges against him. As for Gaetz, if prosecutors can prove the payments to the women were for sex, he could be charged with trafficking them under “force, fraud, or coercion.” Meanwhile: “It is also a violation of federal child sex trafficking law to provide someone under 18 with anything of value in exchange for sex, which can include meals, hotels, drugs, alcohol, or cigarettes. A conviction carries a 10-year mandatory minimum prison sentence.”

a white liar... it matters... he is parsing his words he said he never asked trump, but by being specific like that he is not claiming he asked for one from other people in the white house at the time.

Gaetz reported to have sought a ‘blanket’ pardon from Trump

Quote:
Rep. Matt Gaetz allegedly sought a “blanket” presidential pardon from Donald Trump in the closing weeks of his administration — a request which was ultimately not fulfilled, according to news reports.

Matt Gaetz previously told POLITICO.© AP Photo/Patrick Semansky “The recent false allegations against me are not something I’ve ever discussed with Trump, pardons or otherwise,” Rep. Matt Gaetz previously told POLITICO.
The request for a blanket preemptive pardon for the Florida Republican and unidentified congressional allies, first reported on Tuesday night by The New York Times, came as the Justice Department was opening an investigation into whether Gaetz had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old and paid for her to travel across state lines. It’s the latest development in a scandal that has embroiled the third-term lawmaker after The Times first reported on the investigation last week.

Gaetz, a conservative firebrand, has been a vocal defender of the former president. However, the request for a pardon was quickly dismissed by the White House, as lawyers and officials considered such a broad move could set a bad precedent, the Times reported, citing anonymous sources who were briefed on the discussions.

It’s unclear whether Gaetz or the White House was aware of the Justice Department inquiry when he made the pardon request, The Times said. Although Trump was informed about the request, it was also unclear whether Gaetz had spoken directly with him about the matter.

However, a week ago, the congressman had denied that he had sought a pardon from Trump when asked about the possibility by POLITICO. Reached by phone on Tuesday night, Gaetz stood by that statement but said he had not read the Times article.

“The recent false allegations against me are not something I’ve ever discussed with Trump, pardons or otherwise,” he previously told POLITICO.

Gaetz said that he and other lawmakers had met with Trump to discuss a broader pardon strategy after the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, an exchange in which he advised the former president to pardon himself, his family, administration officials and others who supported Trump’s election claims from a charge of insurrection.

Sources: Gaetz trip to Bahamas part of federal probe into sex trafficking

Quote:
Federal investigators are looking into a Bahamas trip Matt Gaetz allegedly took in late 2018 or early 2019 as part of an inquiry into whether the Florida representative violated sex trafficking laws, multiple sources told CBS News.

Matt Gaetz wearing a suit and tie: America Protests Congress© Kevin Dietsch / AP America Protests Congress
Gaetz was on that trip with a marijuana entrepreneur and hand surgeon named Jason Pirozzolo, who allegedly paid for the travel expenses, accommodations, and female escorts, the sources said.

Investigators are trying to determine if the escorts were illegally trafficked across state or international lines for the purpose of sex with the congressman.

"Traveling across state lines is what creates a federal hook for a prosecution," Arlo Devlin-Brown, a former prosecutor and partner at Covington & Burling, said in a report that aired on the "CBS Evening News with Norah O'Donnell." "It doesn't matter that [Gaetz] personally paid them as long as he knows someone is doing that."

The Justice Department declined to comment. Pirozollo did not respond to repeated attempts to contact him, and declined to comment on his relationship with Gaetz and whether he paid for escorts for him when asked by CBS News on Wednesday outside his office in Orlando.

In a statement to CBS News, a spokesperson from Gaetz's office said: "Rep. Gaetz has never paid for sex, nor has he had sex with an underage girl. What began with blaring headlines about 'sex trafficking' has now turned into a general fishing exercise about vacations and consensual relationships with adults. Yesterday, we even learned of some nonsense 'pardon' story that turned out to be false, and today it's just more euphemism. It's interesting to watch the Washington wheels grinding so hard every time one of their falsehoods gets knocked down."

Investigators also want to know if Gaetz was accepting paid escorts in exchange for political access or legislative favors, the sources said.

In a July 2018 podcast, Pirozzolo told Ganjapreneur.com that Gaetz was working to introduce federal legislation that would boost medical research of cannabis.

"In fact, Congressman Matt Gaetz is in the process of working on legislation up in Washington, D.C., that will help facilitate research on the nationwide level. And we should see a lot of good benefit from them," Pirozzolo said in the podcast. "We've got Congressmen that are actually dealing with this federal legislation right now."

Gaetz introduced the Medical Cannabis Research Act in April 2018 and again in January 2019, though it never came to a vote.

"If there's evidence of a quid pro quo that the congressman was provided with benefits in return for him sponsoring some legislation that's of interest to the donor, that that's a federal crime," said Devlin-Brown.

Pirozzolo is the co-founder and chairman of the board of the Medical Marijuana Physicians Association (AMMPA), and Gaetz was a speaker at two of the organization's conferences. The first took place in October 2017 when Gaetz was joined by Trump ally Roger Stone. According to the Central Florida Post, the conference was immediately followed by a fundraiser for Gaetz's congressional campaign. The second was in May 2018 at the group's "NFL and Medical Cannabis Conference" in Miami.

FEC records reviewed by CBS News show that Pirozzolo made two separate donations of $1,000 each to Gaetz's campaign arm, "Friends of Matt Gaetz," in March 2016 and May 2017.

With his controversial friend apparently poised to strike a plea deal with prosecutors, the Florida Republican's troubles are suddenly getting worse.

A former local official in Florida who faces an array of federal charges, including a sex trafficking count, is expected to plead guilty in the coming weeks, a prosecutor and a defense lawyer said on Thursday in an indication that the defendant could cooperate as a key witness against Representative Matt Gaetz, who is under investigation. A plea by the former elected official, Joel Greenberg, could significantly strengthen the Justice Department's hand as it investigates Mr. Gaetz and others who met Mr. Greenberg through Florida Republican politics and are being scrutinized on potential sex trafficking violations.
