Vacuum pump for board building and repairs
Any suggestions ?
I got a cheap pump on Amazon ( zeny 3.5 Cfm )
Plenty of power but extremely smoky and sputters oil through exhaust ( big mess )
Need something cleaner

Your vacuum cleaner or a 24 dollar shop vac.

Diaphragm pumps work the best.

Quiet operation and they don't contaminate the environment with oil.

Ebay or craigslist

I built my own vacuum press using the info I found here: https://www.veneersupplies.com/pages/DIY__Vacuum__Press.html There are pictures of built vacuum presses. The one I built is the RED one in the first picture of homemade presses.

I bought mine here. The owner builds them and has great customer support. Works great . Makes custom bags and has been in business many years.

Be careful when vacuum bagging a board - it’s possible to collapse the EPS or similar foam. Board Lady recommended no more than 7”-8” on the gauge, I believe.

Brian Hinde always used a Shopvac and would explain in great detail why he did it that way. I remember it had something to do with 7.

I you have an abundance of compressed air supply, then you might wanna look at a venturi pump: cheap, easy to use, effective, no moving parts, almost impossible to break. I use mine to evacuate the A/C system when doing work on cars and it works great. You can get them from Harbour Freight.
With bagging, you'd just have to install a ball valve and close it off after you pull the vacuum you want. Then every "X" interval suck it down somemore as the resin off-gasses.
