I think this would a very 'unusual' choice. I don't wish to be rude but that you even mention stability would suggest that the board, sails or even the carbon boom isn't the best choice for you. This is VERY specialist kit, designed for freestylers to do freestyle

What are you ultimately trying to achieve? Needing less sail area for a given wind strength.

My thinking.....
We use skinny for sail breathing, flex, and wide wind range.
So, why use a rigid boom? That is counter to flexibility and range. It kills feel and touch.
Same with aluminum fins, stiff harnesses, and full monofilament.
My boards are mostly all around freeride.
YOU might dream you are Wyatt or Ty, but I sail for fun and choose my own path.

I have a 2008 Fanatic 104 FSW and just bought a 2021 Psych 102 coming from a 2015 Fanatic Skate. Unfortunately due to a knee injury I haven't been able to actually ride the Psycho this season (it's killing me to not sail), but have been told that it goes upwind quite well and planes up quickly due to the parallel rails. The psycho has a different shape than a lot of other freestyle boards with it's more parallel rails. (I can report back in a month when I can sail again, though that won't help you much now).

My skate definitely planed up earlier than my FSW, was easier to hold speed through a jibe, but did bounce more through chop. Most of the time it wasn't a big issue though. If you already own the 2004 Carve, you could consider having both boards depending on the conditions and what you plan to work on. For me, I'll use the freestyle in flat water, small chop and when I want to work on freestyle moves. I'll used the FSW in more rough conditions, big swell, and potentially waves. Still used the freestyle 8:1 over the FSW

re the size, Mike at Oceanair (whom you should contact for advice), advised chosing the psycho size based on the sail size you expect to use. Since most of my sailing is on a 5.6 in fresh water, I chose the 102. If you're on 5.2 and below, a weigh a tad less, you should be fine on the 92.

Not sure what level you are after 9 years but I guess more/less advanced. If that's the case then dumping your old Carve for any modern Freestyle board is a no-brainer. I don't have Psycho but have JP Freestyle 101. However, paying full price for a freestyle board is silly. Freestyle boards sell quickest given you didn't pay $3K and asking $2K for it.. lol You can find a minty used one for around $1200 $1300. 2020, 2019, 2018 model is of no importance. they are all pretty much same lately.

It will also take you several sessions to get used to one. After Carve it will feel much more reactive and you will really appreciate your decision after a month or two.. The feeling of freestyle board in comparison to your carve will be similar to gybing with say 8m race sail and 5m wave sail. With 8m things happen slow..

Only thing I don't like with Psycho is that air pressure valve and squarish nose.... and ... price lol

Good luck.

I don't see why you don't get both boards. A 2004 Carve has to be pretty darn cheap. I have both the 92 and 102 Psycho and also an 86 litre JP FSW board (2008 yr model) that I use when it's really choppy and chaotic. I can do plenty of freestyle tricks on that board as well, in fact, I did my first forward on it many years ago. Also good for shuvits, shaka, backies, etc...

I too think it's a no brainer for the 92 Psycho: such a great board! The thing that non-freestylers don't understand is that a freestyle board is just great at everything, so for the vast majority of sailors who want to just play around, it'll be the most versitile and fun. However most sailors see "free style" and think, "well, I'm not doing freestyle, so that's not for me." which is wrong.
If you put your favorite wave fin in a freestyle board and just get on and go, you'll have a blast, ZERO learning curve at all, just super fun and easy to sail. The learning curve comes in when you start sailing with a proper freestyle FIN. That will take alot of getting used to. I recommend the Maui Ultra Prostyle 3 (19 cm) or the Makani Koi (21 cm) for the 92 Psycho.
