Thanks loopless for all the updates over the years!
Coming down from the bay area in late June and was wondering about access to Hodges lake.
1) are wing foils allowed? The posts have enumerated different water craft explicitly (kayak, sup, windsurf) so I don't want to assume a new type of watercraft is allowed by association
2) Wind: I read one spot that it will get 15-20 mph consistently (1 day a week? 4 days a week?) on the lake but also read (from 2004) that 8.0 and formula gear was the way to go on a good day. Just trying to get a gauge of the wind conditions there.
My biggest sail is a 5.7 for a 99L freestyle board so probably not lugging that down.
3) Sensor. How can you tell when it's blowing 15? Which sensor / direction? What setup? So I can eye the forecast these next few weeks to learn
4) bring the kiddos (3 & 5) or leave them home? (general family friendliness... sneak out for a quick fix or make it a day trip)
Jay

Follow up question which maybe negates all of the above:
Are weeds a thing at this spot?

Been Winging Hodges on a 5.3, 110 liter board and 2000 front wing. Great spot, lake is open only 3 Wed a month and Weekends. Gusty but nice mellow place

Better late than never to respond.
No weeds, you might hit a good sized bass if unlucky!
Lake is open Wed/Sat/Sun closed every 3rd Wednesday ( and closed for a few months over winter)
$7 to launch windsurf or wing foil or sup. Coast Guard approved life vest required but frankly not enforced. Lack of funding to enforce things.
On a good day, it will be 15-20+. Windsurfers typically are using 7.0+ and free ride boards ( I use 115/7.0) though some guys are on Formula now and then. Obviously popular with lots of dingers lately and some wind-foil.
Sadly , wind is very fickle. When its NW at the coast the kayak launch near the concession (where most people launch) is often gusty and holey. When SW at coast, the wind is more consistent. Look for a marine layer at the coast to boost the thermal. On a good day, it can blow till 6pm as the marine layer moves in at the coast and kicks things up.
There are no 100% reliable sensors. The iWindsurf sensor at the dam will give an overall "is it possibly windy guide", look for that to be gusting 20. The direction on that sensor is meaningless as it is focused by the del dios gorge. An example of how 'annoying' the place can be, I was there 2 weeks ago Saturday, it was really crappy and gusty, then at 3:30 it just turned on solid and blew till 5:30+. So you often need to sit it out as it can just switch on with no rhyme or reason.I have asked iWindSurf to put a sensor at the lake but they don't see the value when it's only open a few days a week and it's tough to find a spot and negotiate with the lake authority.
Great place to bring the family, it can be hot but some shady trees with picnic tables and good hiking + mountain biking.
Windsurfers+Wingers now often outnumber stink-boats in 'boat-launch' fees but it's still a fishermans lake.
PS You will hear talk of the old spot where windsurfing started at the lake and 30 people used to sail in the 'day'. It's up near the dam and only accessible now by walking 3/4 mile or by bike +trailer or by a very long slog upwind as the road was closed years ago.
PPS I hope all the wingers enjoying the lake recognize the years of effort made by the SDWA and local windsurfers to get the lake open again....
