Copied below is an email regarding the next zoom meeting regarding the implementation of a toll to access TI starting in 2024. Is it contrary to TIDA's master plan to have a wind and water sports park on the NE corner? Maybe someone with a better understanding about coastal access can participate in the plan to start charging a toll to access TI.

Not surprising ... San Francisco has been in the hands of democrats-by-name-only for decades. They sold out China Basin to a variety of corporations, and covered it in cement, they gifted the tech industry with millions of our tax dollars, and caused the house market to explode and disfigure the social and cultural identity of the city ... don't hold your breath: they will sell out Treasure Island.

I think that it will be the first example of a city in which to enter a neighborhood you have to pay a fee! Shocked

The next meeting about how most of us will never be able to afford to access TI, is November 17, 2021. The imposition of a toll is despite access for non-motorized water sports was agreed upon years ago. Below is the information about the virtual meeting, and, the statement of the policy wonk, Rachel Hiatt, about why if you are a windsurfer you will be charged $5.00 to get on the island and $5.00 to leave the island:

Come share your thoughts/questions at our virtual outreach event on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2021.

We’ll be presenting information about our proposed rates, discounts, and hours for the Treasure Island toll. We’ll also have information about:
• New or expanded bus and ferry service
• Transit passes

By 2036, the Treasure Island neighborhood will grow by up to 8,000 homes—many offered at below-market rates—housing more than 20,000 new residents.

The transportation network will be designed to prioritize sustainable modes like walking, biking, and taking transit. The Transportation Authority, in its capacity as the Treasure Island Mobility Management Agency, is developing a number of programs and services to support transportation on the island.

To help fund new ferry service, expand transit, and manage congestion for the island, motorists will pay a toll to enter and exit the Islands. The toll and new transit services are anticipated to start in 2024.

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors decided existing Treasure Island residents will not pay the toll. This toll exemption means Treasure Island residents will be able to drive on or off the island any number of times at any time of day and they will not pay the toll.

Private vehicles of non-residents will be tolled when entering and exiting the island. The current proposal is a $5 peak toll and $2.50 off-peak. Households with moderate and low incomes are eligible for a 50% discount. Households with very low incomes are eligible for an exemption.

Learn more at sfcta.org/treasure-island
Next steps
Staff will be seeking approval of the toll rates, discounts and hours during December 2021 meetings of the Treasure Island Mobility Management Agency Committee and Treasure Island Mobility Management Agency Board. Twisted Evil

I would think that a yearly fee for non-residents would be reasonable avenue to investigate, kind of like buying a yearly pass for California State Parks.

This is a not so small part of the sad joke that are politics in San Francisco.

We are supposed to have had an uninterrupted democratic "leftist" administration. Based on the results, a better definition would be right wing republican in wolf cloths.

I said "not so small part" of the joke because they are building a gated community for the ultra-rich on TI. Pretty much as they did in China Basin, minus the entry tool. The fee will keep the little people out: welcome to the privatization of public land for the interests of the few!

When local governments are bent on creating a revenue stream, folks ultimately get soaked, regardless of what side of the aisle it's coming from. I have to admit though, the TI thing is very punitive and ugly in nature. No one wants to be hit coming and going at such a high rate. I only suggested investigating a yearly pass because it can possibly lessen the blow a bit.

lPlease correct me if I'm wrong,
but isn't the proposed toll for access to the Bay Bridge from TI to SF? Cars commuting TI to SF miss paying the toll, yet they benefit by using the bridge for free. They need to share on the large expense of maintaining the bridge too. Every vehicle puts some wear and tear on the bridge, not just those coming from Oakland.

Carl, nobody "benefit by using the bridge for free", you have to go home eventually and pay toll. Bridges are set up with a one-way toll to avoid unnecessary traffic congestion (sigh ...)

Anyway, the issue is not the $5 or $10 toll, the issue is that this is part of the city, and they are not only building millons-dollars-home developments, but they are going to gate them!

Stay tuned. There is work being done on this, and there is time. San Francisco cannot impose a toll without legislation passing that gives them authority. I’ll update this thread before the 17th.
