Talk to me about shoulder, neck, back, and hand or wrist pain while winging.
Is it more, less, or the same as wind foiling. 71 year old gut asking...Just sayin...

Short answer is no, it is not the same as wind foiling. I've not been told about any back, hand or wrist pain but yes to some shoulder pain.

For a small lake like Lopez I think wind foiling is a better option, in my opinion.

Here is an excellent video covering the issue between wing, wind foil & windsurfing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bhv002zeCGI

I'm pretty much in step with everything stated in the video. I would add one huge advantage of the wing is in transport. Either by air or by vehicle. I can fit my wind foiling equipment inside my Prius but there is no room for a passenger as the mast & board reach into the front seat. However, with a wing board & no mast I carry 2 wing boards plus two wings and still have the front seat available.

Either, my limit is 2 hours a day, 3.5 days a week.
Any more, I'm wrecked.
Just like 38 years ago when I started windsurfing.
Most people can't limit themselves when fun is involved.

Wife and I took up winging this year and we are in your age group. As far as our background, me, long time windsurfer but retired three years ago, never foiled on a WS. Wife has 22 years kiting, never foiled. We live at a place where we can play on the water almost daily.

As far as gear and stress the pluses are that the gear is light and easy to handle as compared, that is the reason why gals and kids are getting into it. The starter boards are floaty and easy to slog. So, as far as stress on the body you are free arming and your arms are quite often above shoulder level so it puts your shoulders and elbows in a plane that is different than WS. If you have shoulder or elbow problems then it will effect you. My wife is dealing with this and me too as I had my shoulder reconstructed as few years ago. Toward the end of this season she started to learn how to harness and believes that it will solve her problem. for me, not there yet but problem is minor for me.

Anyway, my opinion is that this is a sport that older athletic people can do and a great sport for total novices
