This topic has come up on Maui recently and probably was not an issue until foiling where we need more clearance over the reefs. But it has been discussed and pondered numerous times here. Why is there a seasonal pattern of highest tides early in the day (midnight to noon) on Maui during winter months and late in the day (after noon) during summer months. To some it is common knowledge here but no explanation has been offered. I'm hoping Mike (Windfind) or someone else knowlegeable might have an answer. I've search for references but all I can find is seasonal variations being lower on average in winter and higher on average in summer, due to admospheric pressure, current, storm patterns etc... This does not explain the persistent daily shift from favorable (for foils) early in winter months and later in summer months. I'm attaching some tide charts where the pattern is obvious. In general, we cannot rely on tides over 1' in the afternoons until March. This is the pattern I noticed last year, and some locals have commented that it has always been that way.

While I'm not the guy that can offer a scientific perspective, I can say that we see the same phenomena and timing here in Santa Barbara but with greater variation in tidal height.
