Hi,

I just moved from Europe to New York City (Brooklyn) and was wondering how to find the right spots to go Wingfoiling (wave and flat water -3.5 to 6m wings) and Windsurfing (waves only, max 5.5m sail)?

I have been driving up and down rockaway beach and Long Island, but struggled to find any spots where others were winging or windsurfing. Any thoughts on how to find the right spots (and where folks are going when it’s windy in nyc) and which wind direction fits best for those spots.

Sorry los of questions from a newbie in nyc…

Thanks a lot - really need to get back on the water!

If you’re willing to travel to New Jersey, I would think that Sandy Hook would satisfy both of your requirements since it offers opportunities for both flat water (bay) and waves (ocean) sailing. It’s also one of the more popular spots in NJ. There are other spots farther South in NJ as well, but Sandy Hook is probably the most convenient given your location.

Also, you don’t mention your size, but going with a maximum 5.5 windsurfing rig will be somewhat limiting. If you want to extend your range of sailable days (especially during summer), I would suggest that you consider adding a larger sail to your kit. Something in the mid-6’s will get a lot of use if you’re willing to go a little larger.

Marcus,

For Long Island info and spots, check this website. Its windsurfing based but there are links with a map of sailing sites, webcams, etc. that are useful.

Sandy Hook as mentioned above has a solid kiting, windsurfing and wing sailing crowd. There is always someone on the water there. Look for Lot C for access to the bay and at the southern end of the lot for ocean access. Access to the park is free now until Memorial Day where it's $20 per car to get in through Labor Day.

Brooklyn has plumb beach. Its a great launch but dont leave gear unattended and lock your vehicle while on the water. Its a medium size bay that is shallow near shore at low tide and chest deep at shore at high tide. Most city sailors and kiters will be there.
