The beach is sandy but changes to pebbles at the water's edge. The dropoff is slow, so watch your fin when you sink the tail. Given the protection of the Leslie Street spit, which runs the entire length of the beach, you can safely sail in offshore wind conditions. However, to get back to shore, you might have to land far from where you started due to the severe wind shadow. The bay is well protected and there are no water hazards except for submerged tree stumps close to the spit. The best winds are S/SW (cross-shore starboard) which create good swells and jumping conditions and SE (cross-onshore port) which make for fast flat water sailing. Since the beach is protected by the spit, you can sail in west and northeast (cross-offshore) and N/NW (offshore) winds, although the wind shadow might cause a long walk back to your car. The water temperature can swing wildly from day to day depending on the wind direction or lack of wind during the last few days. Temperatures can reach 20 deg C in summer months, but for the rest of the sailing season, expect 5-15 deg C. Cherry Beach is at the foot of Cherry Street, five minutes east of downtown Toronto. Take the QEW into Toronto, get off at Jarvis Street, and follow Lakeshore Road to Cherry Street. Follow Cherry Street south to Cherry Beach. If you come in on the DVP, take it south and exit at Eastern Avenue. Go west, then turn left (south) on Cherry Street.

The sensor is located atop the Outer Harbour Marina office on the Leslie Street spit. Because the spit reaches well out from shore, the sensor has a clear view of the wind in all directions. During offshore winds, please keep in mind that trees along the launch create a severe wind shadow close to shore. In this case, you will have to limp out to get a clear fetch and sail the winds monitored by the sensor.
