|
|
At the end of August The Wall had a string of easy 4.2 days. Then on Wed. August 31 The Wall went EPIC!
This video documents that day starting at dawn first as windsurfers on 2.9 to 3.7 sails rip on huge smooth swell. Then in the afternoon a few superb kiters pinched a mile upwind, over empty waters from Rufus, to work the crowded waters of The Wall.
The hoards of windsurfers and a few kiters made for great video imagery and an interesting test of the Rules of the Road. So, as the lyrics say, there is some "dark sarcasm" in the imagery.

Great video ... one question: Was the water cold due to the dam being wide open? I'm surprised to see all the wetsuits in that heat.

That video was shot before the Sept heat wave.
I think the air was colder than the water.
The high temp in HR that day was in the 60's.
Great video! Thanks for taking the time to produce it for everyone to enjoy.

I was sailing 30 miles east of the Wall in board shorts and a 1 mm vest until 8:15 PM the day that video was shot. I couldn't have tolerated a shorty, as the air was in the 90s and the water in the 70s. I haven't worn as much as a shorty since some time in July, and I usually wear more neoprene than most people, especially outside midsummer.
I just don't want to rig up, dress up, and realize I'm underdressed next time I head farther west.

I was there from monday through wednesday, and all I wore was a shorty. The water was warm, but the air was somewhat brisk. (plus it was blowing sub-3.5)

Interesting. I sailed Rufus that day (OP on my 3.2 and 68l board). It was nothing but windsurfers till about 12 or 1pm. Then the kiters showed up (the local rufus windsurfers said the kiters never get there before noon ). One was doing big air and other stuff right next to the shore (I think it was some video they were shooting). While another kiter was having problems getting launched another kiters was doing nothing but laughing at the one with the problems but never offered to help. So sad....
But it never really felt crowded out on the water and the swell was huge. I don't know why they left that venue to sail up to the Wall....
I also was sailing in a shortie that day. The cool air made the idea of boardshorts just a tad too cold for me...
