another winging day at Stick. Also two windsurfers out, one on 5.0 another on bigger. two windsurf foilers, one on 7.8 race kit and another on 5.6-6.1 wave sail/freeride gear.
First day riding the Slingshot Outwit 5'10" x 100l board today.... was definitely harder to get to my feet, but once up it was not that much harder to get going and ride. it's more pressure sensitive as there's just a whole lot less mass moving around. 4m Duotone wing and Slingshot Infinity 99 foil to round out the package. The little 5'10" board is nice and light.

The winging things seem popular in the Bay. There were 6 or 7 at Crissy last Sunday. Crissy is a much heavily used venue than say 10-12 years ago due to foiling. In the old days, guys would be on 4.7m/85L or go home and no one would sailing Sunday.

Friday was another fun day at Da Stick.
Looked pretty bleak when I arrived at 2:30pm. High clouds, very warm, and only a few whitecaps, but started rigging up and by 3pm, the wind started filling in again. Did about two hours sesh until 5pm.
Rode the Duotone Foil Wing 4m and the Slingshot Outwit 5'10" x 100l with the Infinity 99 wing. My first time winging with front and rear footstraps. I came in mid sesh and took off both footstraps. I like being able to move my feet around on the deck wherever i want, and the footstraps weren't really adding any extra control for me yet.
4.8 foiler went out and soon changed his board out to his freestyle board. another windsurfer (goodwind) took out his windSUP and was planing no problem. Another windfoiler went out on 5m
A momentous day at Stick, we had two wingers on the water. other winger was on 5m and changed down to 3m (which was too small).
At the end of the day I was watching four sailors coming in all on different gear: wingdinger, windfoiler, windSUPer, and windsurfer. I thought that was pretty cool.

To each his own, but at the same time, in the same conditions.......that is intriguing.

Lopez lake so good today with almost 20 avg, gust/lull +3/-3 all afternoon. Temp near 70 with 2 WS foils and 2 wings out. 2 mil suit is working but still using thicker booties for the low 50's water temp. Maybe more tomorrow!

fun day winging out of Emeryville. Crissy was totally socked in with fog, and so I headed east. thought of TI, but flooding and nobody there. if i were to get in trouble w/ the wing by myself I'd be pretty screwed. I called a friend, and he gave me some details about foiling at low tide from Emeryville. I also talked to LeeD the day before, and he said he foiled from B yesterday, but had to wade out through 300ft of mud. Great day for the wing. At one point i was continuously foiling through 13 jibes in a row (surpassing my previous best streak of 5)... only dumped in when I tried to switch my feet... still don't know how to do that. Saw one sail downwind later in the sesh... think it was LeeD, but he was pretty far away.
Slingshot Outwit 5'10" x 100l, Infinity 99 foil, and Duotone 4m Wing
February and March so far have been windy but light. Good for foiling and or big gear. i've only windsurfed twice in 2020, but both sessions have been on 4.0/75, so hard to complain... especially for being the beginning of March. I think my 2020 total including foiling is around 15 days

Hey Kevin,
Since you can speak from experience, where do you see winging vs windsurf foiling? Is it a totally different experience?
Just curious since you do both (plus windsurfing).

tajella,
different experiences, and I have people coming to me who had expressed zero interest in windsurf foiling who want to wing foil. It's strange!
As someone who has a surfing and skateboarding background (before windsurfing), the wing allows you really to ride just the foil and turn off the rest. The ability to get on a swell and pump around on it is a bit different than doing it windfoiling. Even my lightest 4.0 rig probably weighs close to 15lbs (5.5lb sail, 2.2lb mast, 4lb boom, plus extension, harness lines, uphaul, etc...). That's additional weight that needs to go up and down every time you pump.
So far, I think I'm more efficient windsurfing foiling, but the gap is closing. I think windsurf foiling gives you that nice compact feeling.... no leashes, no separate parts, and the rig weight is born by the board and foil. I find it less physical than wing foiling.
That said, there are different styles of windfoiling and wingfoiling.... some with very large foils and slower speeds and some with smaller foils, higher speeds, more sail/wing power.
Honestly, they are all fun in their own way, and my favorite thing to do is still a good windsurfing day in 20-25kt (or more).
Hope I answered some of your questions. If you were asking about a different aspect of windfoil vs wingfoil let me know.

Thanks Kevin. That was exactly what I was wondering - what is the difference in the experience and why one over the other. I know everyone's experience is probably different, but its great to hear from someone who has tried both (or three).
I am not an early adopter, so it's good to hear firsthand from the pioneers of this new sport.
