Wing sails are designed for water; they are also a great way for people like me, who live in very cold weather in December through February or March, to extend our "sailing" season by doing stand-up land sailing on longboard skateboards on parking lots. A wing sail can eliminate the most dangerous part of stand-up land sailing. That is the switching of front foot to back foot in a downwind turn by actually moving the feet. With a wing sail which is not connected to a board by a mast the wing can directly move from the board end that was the front to the other board end (which was back but is now front) while the feet only need to change from pointing left to pointing right without switching positions. There are a few videos of wing sailing on land, parking lots, or sand where sailors can be seen doing 360's without needing to do the fancy footwork required in a jib when the sail is attached to the board through a mast.
I live in Iowa. Wing sailing is going to help me on packed snow, ice, and parking lots.
