you seem to agree that the fin, too, provides vertical lift because it functions like a foil by bending.

Yes, but that doesn't explain how a super-stiff, very short, unbendable fin provides what it normally called "lift" ... i.e, lateral/upwind lift (actually, resistance to being pushed downwind by sail and body aerodynamic drag). I've had boards with one, 20 cm, thick, frigging RIGID aluminum fin that pinched upwind just fine.

ossimark, you explained things so very well. I'm suitably impressed. I don't think that it could have been said any better.

thanks Jay Baldwin...
i have that video somewhere as well = nice

there is also "Jim Drake's Windsurf Physics"
https://joewindsurfer.blogspot.com/2008/04/jim-drakes-windsurf-physics.html

but why complicate matters
for me, it is about trial and error
what works for me
48cm fin for an 8.x m² sail and about 80 cm wide board
40cm fin for a 7.x m² sail and about 70 cm wide board
longboards work with shallow fins
wide boards work with LONG fins

just do what works Smile

on the snow the angle of the skis creates the lateral resistance Smile

and ... NO lift required Smile
you shoulda come out this winter n checked it out Smile

guess I got carried away with the smilies aye
and yes, I am Canadian aye
