Steve...that's a classic story...Leaving two 13 yo's at the car in Mid Jan , while you go grab a little wind. Holy Cow you got lucky.. My guess is you were leaning towards the hike on the other side.. That would have been an adventure knowing your son was sitting in the car... Crazy addiction..

Ill be heading your way in September...

And you want to hear classic stories??? B.W. (Before Windsurfing) I had a Hobie 18. Some serious badness happened throughout that period - pitchpoling a boat that I was told was impossible to pitchpole, losing my crew during a race in the Gulf of Mexico when his harness broke, having an inexperienced sailor slip into Lake Ponchartrain during a squall and almost drown, launching my boat through energized powerlines taking down power for the marina, having my friend succumb to hypothermia in the bay and almost sinking it in Bahia de Los Angeles. After the last one I sold it and took up windsurfing. Still miss that boat... (No people were harmed)

With the exception of the Lake Ponchartrain incident, all on my Hobie 18. The Lake Ponchartrain incident happened this way: I went to Slidel to sail and my sister came out to meet me with a doctor from the hospital where she worked. He had just purchased a new Hobie 18 and I was going to help him get started. He showed up and we went out. I noticed that he had rigged it pretty loose and sloppy. We sailed out and I gave him the tiller. As happens often there, a squall came up and the wind kicked up pretty stiff. It was getting to the point where we should not have been out, when I saw him just slip off the stern of the boat. Now I was left with his sloppily rigged boat and my sister and her friend. So I grabbed the tiller and bore off to come get him. But because of the rigging and the strong wind I could not point very well. That's when I noticed him slip under. He was yelling "Help!". He also didn't have a PFD on. So my sister grabbed one and swam to him to give it to him. I was able to maneuver it close and yanked them on board, then ran with the wind back to the beach, white knuckle, sphinchter clenching all the way in. I think he sold the boat after than incident. It was very unsettling.
