open lake forecast for lake michigan
national weather service milwaukee/sullivan wi
256 am cdt sun sep 8 2024

for waters beyond five nautical miles of shore on lake michigan.

waves are provided as a range of significant wave heights, which
is the average of the highest 1/3 of the wave, along with the
average height of the highest 10% of the waves which will
occasionally be encountered.

.synopsis...

high pressure of 30.2 inches will park over the ohio river valley
today into early monday. much of lake michigan will be on the
northern edge of this high, and a slightly stronger pressure
gradient will remain overhead. as a result, west winds will become
breezy with 20 knot gusts over most of the lake through the
daytime hours.

tonight, a cold front will approach the lake from the north,
compressing the pressure gradient further. a strong low level jet
will result and gusty winds will mix down to lake level. gusts
between 25 and 30 knots will be possible over most of the lake
after sunset until shortly before dawn. winds will then ease from
north to south over the lake around dawn until the early
afternoon, as winds change from southwest to northwest and
northerly for a brief period. winds will return to southerly
monday night and will remain light until late tuesday afternoon,
when some modest breeziness will return.
